The San Juan Botanical Garden, also known as the Botanical Garden of the University of Puerto Rico, is located in the Caribbean city of San Juan, capital of Puerto Rico. This lush 300acre “urban garden” of native and exotic flora serves as a laboratory for the study, conservation and enrichment of plants, trees, flowers, grasses and many other plants. Seventy-five acres are landscaped and open to the general public as well as researchers.The entrance is located off the south side of the intersection of Highway 1 and Road 847 in Río Piedras. The “Bosque Urbano del Nuevo Milenio” or (Urban Forest of the New Millennium), a project for the conservation and growth of the urban forest, is on the eastern side of the Botanical Garden.BackgroundThe botanical garden, proposed in 1959, was endorsed by the Council of Higher Education of Puerto Rico on 12 September 1969. On the initiative of Mr. Arturo Roque and supported by the President of the University, Dr. Jaime Benítez, the Botanical Garden was inaugurated on March 10, 1971.Administratively, it functions as a part of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez campus. Its international identification code is UPR. Fred Schaffner is the director.

  • Botanischer Garten, a place to make contact with the nature in peace and quiet single or family. It offers trails and paths rich in foliage, plants and wildlife in a quiet environment.

  • Place to do exercise, yoga, or simply to observe part of the tropical flora. Stroll by the chapel of the bambuas, the promenade of the Palmetum or the Monet Lake. It offers beautiful areas for picnics.

  • We came to San Juan on the Carnival Magic. We got a taxi to the gardens ($30). We were greeted by a sweet young girl. Free entry to walk around. We decided to take the golf cart tour ($5/each) with a ...  more »

  • It's a garden in the "side' of San Juan. Take time to walk, breathe and enjoy nature there. Be away of stressors and learn something about mother nature and gardening structures.
  • Excellent place. Quiet, full of nature and relaxation. It's beautiful!!!
  • Relaxing beautiful place. Look for different events each weekend from art classes for children, yoga, meditation, orchid festival, even a food truck event.
  • No bicycles or skates of any kind allowed.
  • Beautiful paths through forest and by ponds. And it's free!
