Hacienda Buena Vista, Ponce

(180 reviews on the web)
Farm Historic Site
Wake up to not only smell the coffee beans, but also learn the history of how they were produced, at Hacienda Buena Vista. One of Puerto Rico’s best remaining examples of a 19th-century coffee plantation, the site was established in 1833 and stretches across 33.1 ha (81.8 ac) of fertile land, including a subtropical forest. Take a tour of the plantation, fully refurbished and in complete working order, to gain a harrowing insight into the lives of the slaves who worked here. Step inside the farm and grinding mill to witness the power of the Rio Canas and how it operates the still-working hydraulic turbine. If you don't feel like taking a tour, enjoy a self-guided wander through the property. See Hacienda Buena Vista and all Ponce has to offer by arranging your trip with our Ponce holiday planner.

  • Interesting, enriching and learning experience - not to miss if you are in the South of Puerto Rico! We had a good time both indoor and outdoor. Good job to make this place running as a museum!  more »

  • This is a coffee plantation. Great tour very interactive. They actually run the machines! The machine is the only one left in the world! You need to make reservations! And sure to bring a bottle of water! And don't arrive too early. It's gated and they don't open the gates until appointment time. the tour is an hour long. It's quite a trip up the mountain a driving Mecca for driving enthusiast.
  • Amazing historic site. Full of historical details and very beautiful nature. On it you'll learn how family de Vives lived and how they used the river to prepare coffee, corn, and basically live of it, while visiting the houses, mill, and following the man made river canal. The tour is about an hour and a half and the staff is very friendly.
  • The place is beautiful and the great history.
  • Learn a lot about the coffee industry in Puerto Rico.
  • An excellent tour of an old coffee plantation and mill. See the beautiful waterfall and water system powering the mill, see the baby ducks and donkeys, and tour the quaint main house with many interesting antiques from the old days. Highly recommend.
