Vieques, in full Isla de Vieques, is an island - municipality of Puerto Rico (U.S.) in the northeastern Caribbean, part of an island grouping sometimes known as the Spanish Virgin Islands. Vieques is part of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and retains strong influences from 400 years of Spanish presence in the island.Vieques lies about 8mi east of the Puerto Rican mainland, and measures about 21mi long by 4mi wide. Its most populated barrio is Isabel Segunda (sometimes written "Isabel II"), the administrative center on the northern side of the island. The population of Vieques was 9,301 at the 2010 Census. The island's name is a Spanish spelling of an American Indian word (likely Taíno) said to mean "small island". It also has the nickname "Isla Nena", usually translated from the Spanish as "Little Girl Island", alluding to its perception as Puerto Rico's little sister. During the colonial period, the British name was "Crab Island".Vieques is best known internationally as the site of a series of protests against the United States Navy's use of the island as a bombing range and testing ground, which led to the navy's departure in 2003. Today the former navy land is a national wildlife refuge, with numerous beaches that still retain the names given by the navy, including Red Beach, Blue Beach and Green Beach. The beaches are commonly listed among the top beaches in the Caribbean for their azure-colored waters and white sands.

  • The island is very clean and safe with good roads. You can see how much has been done to recover while there are many places which are still closed. Tourism would help the economy and promote job oppo...  more »

  • We were three friends in a three-day visit that we became very short. We arrived on a ferry from Fajardo which cost us or$ 2 per person. Then we take a transport to the sector of hope in Vieques (had recommended us staying there because it is beautiful) transportation cost U$ 3 per person. We stayed at Lazy Jack, that was good. Clean. A little expensive but in Puerto Rico is nothing cheap (or$ 80 for three) the Lazy Jack hostel has a restaurant and make you a discount if these hosted there. His specialty is pizzas and natural juices are very good. The hostel is located facing the sea. Puerto Rico enjoying the beach and fishermen spend with their boats. You can easily go swimming until a key which is located about 300 meters beachfront. You'll see colorful fish and perhaps some type of snapper larger, I recommend asking for a tour of the bioluminescent Bay. It was entertaining, will be at night and take you kayaking to the middle of the Bay to see that luminescent micro-organism. There is a very quiet beach and nothing busy: Crescent beach. We arrived from hope and swim alone. We saw some raccoons looking for crabs on the coast. I recommend sharing with the Puerto Ricans who are very friendly and enjoy your music: salsa, pump, full, and Cultura Profética reggae.

  • The world must see true Paradise Indeed !! So Amazing this Island is a little piece of heaven on this earth. And the people are just as amazing Love it .. cant wait for my return there.
  • Must Visit! FYI... everything its working normally in the island and they are ready for business. Vieques has LOTS of beautiful beaches so you can literally spend the whole day "beach hoping" and you will probably love them all. Last but not least the BIOLUMINICENT trip is a MUST! I dont have the words to explain what a great experience that is, of course try to go in New Moon so you can experience the full glow of it.
  • This is a beautiful tranquil location where the sounds of the waves gently ushers you into sleep
  • A bucket list must. Bioluminescent bay on moonless nights is a divine experience. 741Taxi Co. Very helpful in getting you around the island
  • This is paradise to me
