Black Sand Beach, Isla de Vieques

Examine the contrast of bright blue water against black sand at Black Sand Beach. This out-of-the-way spot takes a 10-minute trek through a rugged rainforest trail to reach the beach. Once on shore, look for streaks of black stretching among ordinary yellow sand. Eventually the black sand dominates the shoreline and sits in unique contrast to blue water and an orange beachfront covered in green plant life. Inland volcanic materials that wash down a stream during heavy rains form the unique color.
