The Mine Trail (La Mina), El Yunque National Forest

(4.3/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
One of the most popular walks in El Yunque, The Mine Trail (La Mina) leads through lush rainforest to an impressive 10 m (35 ft) waterfall. Take a refreshing dip in the cool waters at the bottom of the cascade, or sit by and watch as the water dashes over the huge boulders of the cliffs. At a length of 1.2 km (0.7 mi), the trail takes about 30 to 45 minutes in one direction; walkers of all abilities and experiences should be able to keep up. That said, do wear shoes with traction so as not to slip along slick surfaces. • Amazing view + refreshing. The water is very cold so be prepared! I bought water shoes in old San Juan before coming and it was the best purchase I've made.
  • Good trail for the family to take (5 and 2 year old for us) - paved the entire way. We went on a non-rain day, so it wasn't slippery.
  • The trail ends at La Mina Falls. Some children and teens walked into the pool at the base of the falls, but not recommended.
