Culebrita Lighthouse, Culebra

4.6
Culebrita Lighthouse is the only remaining Spanish-era structure in the Culebra archipelago. Construction of the lighthouse began on September 25, 1882, and it was completed on February 25, 1886. The Spanish Crown built the lighthouse to help secure its claim over the main island of Culebra. It is the most eastern light outside mainland Puerto Rico. It guides navigation through the Virgin Passage and the Vieques Sound connecting in the Puerto Rico Light System with the Cape San Juan Light.
It was one of the oldest operating lighthouses in the Caribbean until 1975 when the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard finally closed the facility. The United States Coast Guard has replaced the lighthouse with a solar powered light beacon.
The Culebrita Lighthouse was registered on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on October 22, 1981; however, no work has been done to maintain the facility. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage, and in 1995 the tower was destroyed by Hurricane Marilyn. The Culebra Foundation, starting in 1994, has tried to attract local and federal attention to save the lighthouse, but they have had little success. Presently, the lighthouse is in danger of collapsing.
For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Culebra holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Culebrita Lighthouse and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • What an unexpected find! It is being renovated now, it is worth it to see it before it is a tourist attraction. Proper shoes a must---not flip-flops.  more »
  • The lighthouse itself and the views from the top were worth the hike up. Proper shoes and water is a must. I recommend going early before it gets too hot. It's a shame such a treasure is in such bad s...  more »

  • You can only visit by boat making it a very unspoiled beach with great snorkeling and beautiful sand.
  • BEAUTIFUL!! Culebra, Puerto Rico ❤️🇵🇷💥☘️🌹🏵️☀️
  • Beautiful! Good for those who like a low key getaway. No major resorts on the island to my knowledge.
  • One of the cutest anchorages in the Spanish virgin islands. Could be a bit surgy sometimes, but not as bad as many anchorages in the Bahamas. The island has a few walks. I recommend climbing on the cliff on the north side. We saw one of the best sunsets ever from that cliff. The walk to the lighthouse is nice too. It looks like you can get through the hole in a fence and climb the lighthouse.
  • The most beautiful beach in the world.
