(3.8/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
Get a close-up look at the ornate, Baroque mansion at Casa de Mateus, the home of past Portuguese nobility. Inspired by the works of an Italian architect, the Mourao family finished the complex in 1743. Note that the decorative themes on the facades appear consistently throughout the property. You can wander the gardens to get a glimpse of the wealthy and tranquil life of the residents who once lived here. Join a guided tour to view the interior of the villa and learn a bit more about its history. You'll see antique furniture, books, paintings, and other artwork, as well as wooden ceiling carvings and religious pieces in the house's chapel. To go inside, you must take a tour. Using our international travel planner, Vila Real attractions like Casa de Mateus can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • 11.50 euros per person to visit the House, 8 euros to visit the garden and more 8 euros to get in the car! Absurd, especially compared with the Portuguese and even more in a city away from major centers.

  • Worth doing the tour. The visit to the gardens allows not only the culture that the site has to transmit. The interior of the House is splendid and the guides are great. Recommend!

  • still inhabited by his owner, his visits are limited and prohibited domestic pictures. They therefore views outside that have caught our attention. The family operates vineyards producing a heady and enchanting wine: the wine of "Mateus" very famous in Portugal. The garden "to the French" is beautiful and well maintained.

  • Beautiful house and gardens. Used for the label of Mateus Rose apparently. A drink favoured by the Brits in the 1970s. Highlights include chestnut ceilings in the house, the library with beautiful copper plate illustrations and the box hedging in the gardens in the Italianate style.
  • Beautiful house. Entrance too expensive but if you've come this far. The gardens are delightful.
  • Fantastic palace-like house. Beautiful gardens
  • This place is magic... Miracle... Very romantic...
  • Beautiful house and gardens - no photos inside!
