Casa de Mateus, Vila Real

3.6
#1 of 13 in Historic Sites in Vila Real District
Get a close-up look at the ornate, Baroque mansion at Casa de Mateus, the home of past Portuguese nobility. Inspired by the works of an Italian architect, the Mourao family finished the complex in 1743. Note that the decorative themes on the facades appear consistently throughout the property. You can wander the gardens to get a glimpse of the wealthy and tranquil life of the residents who once lived here. Join a guided tour to view the interior of the villa and learn a bit more about its history. You'll see antique furniture, books, paintings, and other artwork, as well as wooden ceiling carvings and religious pieces in the house's chapel. To go inside, you must take a tour. • The photographs do believe a space which does not correspond to the real. Going from the beginning: at the entrance to a very nice man that tells him to enter the car into the parking lot by paying an exorbitant amount-we didn't want to and I'm glad because the distance from the entrance to the House itself does great even with children. We had a tour scheduled. The appointment we were in space with another couple, and nothing happened. When we questioned why this delay the response was a bad breeding and a lack of good mood scary "because I mark the visits on top of the other and I'm finishing up a visit that still has wine tasting so I'm still going to take!" And actually it took the visit started 20 minutes after the appointed time, and after the all expenses paid. The visit to the House was made "to run", without the person who guides the visitor knew anything more than decorated. The guide talks about some things, but what we see exposed do not always seem to match what is being explained. Above all in part of the rooms in what it seems is that they get "remains" the stately homes for around to fill the space. The House is still private, used by the family, by which in practice visit 1/3 of the House. Very cold, and very light parka-we were clearly in the dark. At one point we went to visit the Church, but with the Guide to calling us to run and clean up, and why? Because the House of Matthew closes at 5:00 pm-even having started the visit with 20 minutes of delay there is no care. At this time the main entrance was closed, so we had to go out with the kids for a side gate to GIVE DIRECTLY to the national road without sidewalks, without HAVING a PLACE to GO through, and WE with CHILDREN! Before our outrage what happened from the Casa de Mateus? A shrug and go out to have already paid (and good!) Not even an apology, nothing. The mirror of water, is without water and no one warns you when markup is a clearly open space on the basis of: "come, pay to pay the electric bill because we're broke." With the amount of benefits you received is a shame!

  • Stunning walk. Stunning house. The garden is above any expectation. The fir tunnel's air is to die for. One of the nicest examples of Portuguese garden building ! The house is not in the same league but still worths to go with the guided only walks.
  • Nice guide, interesting house. Be sure you book your visit in advance. I have been in winter and still there were no places for the 1st two tours.
  • Very nice visit and experience. Love the gardens and the tour. The entrance price however it's a bit unjustified. That said, if you made it to this place then bite the entrance fee (check online) and go in, because you made it to far to not enjoy this great place. Even if just visiting the gardens will be worthwhile. Aim for the summer time so you can enjoy the local wine tasting. WARNING: the have nothing to do with the mateus wine. They will nicely explain why. RECOMMENDATION: have lunch at the small tourist shop directly in from of the entrance. A little hidden gourmet gem at the second floor and a great little souvenir shop as well.
  • Beautiful garden, entrance price too high. Go visit the restaurant right at the entrance when you are there. Best meal I had during this vacation.
  • Very expensive tickets. Not interested
