Where to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia

Located just across the river from Porto's Old Town, Vila Nova de Gaia boasts a distinctive identity of its own.You can take advantage of the area's trendy riverfront district and its world-famous Port wine cellars by staying in one of the neighborhoods just south of the bridges to Old Town Porto. This puts you within easy walking distance of the wine cellars, while leaving you in close proximity to historical sites across the river by foot, bus, or taxi. Farther from the river are several international chain hotels offering comfortable rooms with high standards of cleanliness. You'll also find locally run inns and bed and breakfasts in the heart of the city's more residential neighborhoods of Cravelos and Mafamude.

  • We were looking for a more intimate tour experience than the large houses could provide. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and tasting, and bought a few nice bottles to take home.  more »

  • Very nice tour through the Ramos Pinto house. The guide was very knowledgeable. At the end there was a port tasting (3 glasses). I would definitely recommend visiting one of the port houses when you visit Porto!
  • Great porto wine tasting, very sweet. Too bad haven't aperitifs to eat with it to valance sweetness. They have on menu but not when we visited. Price as touristic attraction is good. 10 cups of wine tastings for 2 persons for 15 euro.
  • Very great experience. You will see the history of wine , how it is made and wine taste and a lot more. Also very old wines. I highly recommend.
  • Tour was great. The guide was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot about port wine and found it very interesting. They save the best for last which is the wine tasting. The tour last about an hour and it is given in English, French and Portuguese.
  • My favorite port wines I tried out of 7 cellars in Porto. They were an excellent introduction to port wine.
