Sample and learn about one of Portugal's most famous traditional products at Ferreira, a wine-making estate specializing in port. Founded in 1751, the company boasts a long pedigree in the important regional industry. Take a cellar tour, which gives you background information on the growing and production processes. You'll see the storage facilities where the wine is aged. Afterward, you can taste of several different port varieties, depending on the specific tour, and maybe even get a glimpse of the site's 19th-century tasting room. Be sure to book online ahead of time, especially if you'd like to arrange a private group tour. To visit Ferreira on your trip to Vila Nova de Gaia, use our Vila Nova de Gaia travel itinerary maker.

Where to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia

Located just across the river from Porto's Old Town, Vila Nova de Gaia boasts a distinctive identity of its own.You can take advantage of the area's trendy riverfront district and its world-famous Port wine cellars by staying in one of the neighborhoods just south of the bridges to Old Town Porto. This puts you within easy walking distance of the wine cellars, while leaving you in close proximity to historical sites across the river by foot, bus, or taxi. Farther from the river are several international chain hotels offering comfortable rooms with high standards of cleanliness. You'll also find locally run inns and bed and breakfasts in the heart of the city's more residential neighborhoods of Cravelos and Mafamude.

  • I know Porto is the home of port but the rest of the world has caught up. Novices might find the tour good but I'm old and been drinking the world's ports for 42 years and it was just a tour for touri...  more »

  • Really enjoyed our tasting while we were there! Not as busy as some of the other places so it was nice to sit down and relax.
  • Awful organization, make you wait in line just to find out about pricing options and the times tours are offered in different languages. Don't waste your time here and visit another winery instead (many to choose from).
  • Not my favourite winery to see. It was okay.
  • The trip was informative, quite short.
  • I went there today and the tour was ok. But I bought some wines and now I just saw in the supermarket the prices for the same wines are 35% cheaper than at Ferreira! I feel like a tourist trap and will never more buy any wine from them. If you go don't buy any wine! Just go for the tour.
