Where to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia

Located just across the river from Porto's Old Town, Vila Nova de Gaia boasts a distinctive identity of its own.You can take advantage of the area's trendy riverfront district and its world-famous Port wine cellars by staying in one of the neighborhoods just south of the bridges to Old Town Porto. This puts you within easy walking distance of the wine cellars, while leaving you in close proximity to historical sites across the river by foot, bus, or taxi. Farther from the river are several international chain hotels offering comfortable rooms with high standards of cleanliness. You'll also find locally run inns and bed and breakfasts in the heart of the city's more residential neighborhoods of Cravelos and Mafamude.

  • I visited Terrace 360 for two drinks and cheese served with a port poached pear. The selection of food and wine was good. The prices were reasonable and the food was enjoyable. The terrace has amazing...  more »
  • We went here to do a free port tasting that was part of our hop on hop off bus ticket. That was nice enough, but then we discovered they had a wine bar on the rooftop. It was a great spot to try/buy a...  more »
  • Got a voucher for this experience as part of our Red Bus tour package and came here after a Douro boat trip. It's only one glass per person and only two ports (traditional and a rose) on offer, but we...  more »

  • If you come to visit the cellars of this great wine remember that it isn't here! You can't even make the appointment here. It's just a multimedia house with commercials for the brand, no visits or working multimedia. If you took the boat you get a free complimentary taste of the wine but any more tastes and the price of each taste is exactly the price of the whole bottle at the supermarket... Trust me I checked! Can't say much of the restaurant because we didn't eat there, the terrace was nice. The wine is good but this place is the ultimate letdown of all.
  • Decent port. Nice atmosphere. Aims at the younger crowd. Definitely not one of the high-quality port places in town
  • I didn't try the restaurant. No tour?!? The whole place is one big publicity to the brand. Ok terrace with nice view. Nice staff.
  • The view on the roof is great, but the staff is slow and there's no shelter from the wind (except if you go inside downstairs)
  • No actual winery tour but that's what it makes it special and different. Instead you get an amazing port and cheese pairing with crackers and an excellent and knowledgeable guide who treats you like a friend and guest in her house, rather than a customer. Really great experience.
