Where to stay in Vila Nova de Gaia

Located just across the river from Porto's Old Town, Vila Nova de Gaia boasts a distinctive identity of its own.You can take advantage of the area's trendy riverfront district and its world-famous Port wine cellars by staying in one of the neighborhoods just south of the bridges to Old Town Porto. This puts you within easy walking distance of the wine cellars, while leaving you in close proximity to historical sites across the river by foot, bus, or taxi. Farther from the river are several international chain hotels offering comfortable rooms with high standards of cleanliness. You'll also find locally run inns and bed and breakfasts in the heart of the city's more residential neighborhoods of Cravelos and Mafamude.

  • Upon enquiring about port wine tasting we were lectured by one of vasconcello's employees that this is not a bar, and we were generally treated as if we were trying to score some free booze. During hi...  more »

  • Fantastic tasting experience where you can try their best products unlike many other cellars. This is a place for wine lovers interested in buying, there's a reason most of these reviews are in French, they know good wine and this is it!
  • Great port. Good memories of this port house. Looking for a way to order this port from Portugal to Holland.
  • Very knowledgeable and good to talk to. No tour or tasting available, however, unless you're going to purchase a very pricey bottle.
  • We really loved the place and friendly staff. Great Porto, way better than the mainstream brands.
  • Their ports are pricey but much better than what you'll get from the industrial producers. I recommend the 30 year personally. Call in advance to arrange a tour!
