Pico Alto, Vila do Porto
(4.3/5 based on 20 reviews on the web)
Pico Alto is the highest point, 586.64m, on the island of Santa Maria, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.HistoryThe initial formation of the Facho-Pico Alto Volcanic Complex was a phase of intense volcanism, resulting from submarine eruptions as early as 5 million years ago, resulting in the formation of Pico do Facho and extensive pillow lavas. Remnants of these pillow lavas can be identified 180m above sea level, helping to increase the size of the island to roughly its current dimensions.Following these eruptions, the land receded into the sea, resulting into a period of sub-aerial volcanism that resulted in the great relief in the complex, which is associated with lahars and erosional growth. The Pico Alto complex occurred continuously between 5 and 3 million years ago.On 5 December 2012, the Secretaria Regional dos Recursos Naturais, Azores Laurel and other plants. This followed a program of eliminating invasive plants species that began in 2011, under the Plano Regional de Controle de Flora Invasora em Áreas Sensíveis program.

  • I think that must be one of the places to visit on the island, given the spectacular nature of the possible landscapes to admire, if there is fog, staying with an idea about what is worth visiting. You can see the contrast between the lush pine forests and green pastures with cows to take advantage and the arid island zone, making us remember our Alentejo. At the top stands a sign that reminds us the biggest air disaster happened in Portugal.

  • First a drive and then some steps up to the top.. well worth it..it is like looking at two different islands sandwiched together.. one side to the north green and very scenic the other side the south ...  more »
  • Easy access and beautiful views of Santa Maria. Avoid days of fog and attention to the slippery stairs on arrival
