Convento de Cristo, Tomar

4.8
Must see · World heritage site · Religious Site · Church
The Gothic- and Moorish-styled chambers, cloisters, and hallways of Convento de Cristo reflect the era of the Templars, Knights of the Order of Christ, and lavishly dressed royals. Meticulously crafted over the course of centuries (since the year 1160), the convent was adorned with extensive wall art, decorative windows, extravagant tiles, colorful gardens, and complex ornaments from top to bottom. Walk through its tall rooms and seemingly endless labyrinths of hallways, and view the Romanesque church, filled with Gothic paintings, gargoyles, and religious sculptures. Outside, explore the gardens filled with trees, flowers, arched passages, fountains, and tombs. • Such an unforgettable place. 2 hours away from Lisbon and you can find yourself in this thrilling place. Convent of Christ that will remind you a bit of Game of Thrones movie :) Really interesting to walk around the long corridors and different floors. Really interesting and exciting to see it. It is located in Tomar city, which also has couple of nice old streets.
  • spectacular castle and grounds. Within walking distance from the main town plaza in Tomar, but be warned its a steep walk up that hill ! the small entry fee is worth spending, while exploring you will find some of the most elegant architecture and stonework housing amazing artworks and sculptures. If your game to express your chanting ability you will also discover incredible acoustic qualities in many of the rooms. The whole place is beautiful and spooky at the same time, perfect place to film a horror movie
  • Amazing visit to the Convent of Christ in Tomar! Absolutely fascinating place and well worth the €6 entry fee (for 1 adult). So much to see both inside the buildings and in the grounds outside. Best bit for us was exploring the dormitories and kitchen! Highly recommended 👍
  • One of the most informative and interesting places to get to see in Portugal. Well worth the visit. Friendly and helpful staff... inexpensive as well
  • So beautiful and historically rich. Dated from the medieval age, it was home for the templar knights during many years. It's completely worth the visit as it is huge inside and outside with beautiful gardens worth of seeing during the spring. Also, Tomar city is beautiful and quiet. 2 days or 1 day trip it's enough to check on the city but I'm sure you will not leave without that feeling of coming back one day!
