Convento da Ordem de Cristo, Tomar
(4.8/5 based on 1,600+ reviews on the web)
The Gothic- and Moorish-styled chambers, cloisters, and hallways of Convento da Ordem de Cristo reflect the era of the Templars, Knights of the Order of Christ, and lavishly dressed royals. Meticulously crafted over the course of centuries (since the year 1160), the convent was adorned with extensive wall art, decorative windows, extravagant tiles, colorful gardens, and complex ornaments from top to bottom. Walk through its tall rooms and seemingly endless labyrinths of hallways, and view the Romanesque church, filled with Gothic paintings, gargoyles, and religious sculptures. Outside, explore the gardens filled with trees, flowers, arched passages, fountains, and tombs. Use our Tomar tour planner to add Convento da Ordem de Cristo and other attractions to your Tomar vacation plans.

  • unique, fabulous, historical, famous for its theatre. Templars are revisited. Full of mystery. famous for the "window" of the discovery times.
  • If you're passionate about the Temple, this is a place you must visit. This huge monastery is the Magna work of the Temple, I would say that at European level. Their magnificent cloisters and its unmistakable "tray" makes this enclave a convent that is very different from the rest of them that I have visited.

  • For me it is the Gothic-Manueline monument most beautiful of Portugal after the Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon.
