Convento da Ordem de Cristo, Tomar

4.8
#1 of 12 in Things to do in Tomar
Religious Site Tourist Spot
The Gothic- and Moorish-styled chambers, cloisters, and hallways of Convento da Ordem de Cristo reflect the era of the Templars, Knights of the Order of Christ, and lavishly dressed royals. Meticulously crafted over the course of centuries (since the year 1160), the convent was adorned with extensive wall art, decorative windows, extravagant tiles, colorful gardens, and complex ornaments from top to bottom. Walk through its tall rooms and seemingly endless labyrinths of hallways, and view the Romanesque church, filled with Gothic paintings, gargoyles, and religious sculptures. Outside, explore the gardens filled with trees, flowers, arched passages, fountains, and tombs. Use our Tomar tour planner to add Convento da Ordem de Cristo and other attractions to your Tomar vacation plans.

  • If you won't be getting to the Quinta do Regaleria in Sintra, this should fill your Manueline architecture quota. The famous window can be seen best from a cell (monk's bedroom) in the dormitory area ...  more »
  • This is one of my favourite places to visit, every single time its a mix of peace and and humbleness. This monument made me love history, how crazy it is to think this little city, lost in the middle ...  more »
  • Enjoyed all this and great they could built such buildings in the past. The gardens were also great!  more »

  • The reviews of this place we're excellent so I decided to go. I wasn't disappointed it was really awesome. Could have spent a whole day here. Would like to go back someday
  • Absolutely worth the visit every time I come back to Portugal~
  • Fantastic monastery to visit! Very unique history. Helpful information in both English and Portuguese throughout the buildings. This will take about a half day to tour properly-- potentially longer.
  • Just came back from Tomar 4 days ago (25-Jan-2017) to Vancouver Canada. This is an amazed building full of history in this beautiful and tranquil town. You have to come to see it yourself.
  • Huge piece of history. Unfortunately inaccessible using wheelchair and very hard with pushchair.

Where to stay in Tomar

Stay at one of Tomar's centrally located mid-range hotels within its historical core to put yourself in prime position for sightseeing and taking in the local atmosphere. While accommodation options lie on both banks of the Nabao River, try staying in one of the hotels or apartment complexes on the western bank for sweeping views across of the other side, a comfortable room, and a quick walk to the city's 12th-century church, a World Heritage Site. You can manage costs by staying in a locally owned bed and breakfast or guesthouse, which often provide a meal. These accommodations often come with local advice on sightseeing and nearby activities, and may even get you into a traditional Portuguese residence.
