Vast stretches of white and golden sands, classical South Iberian and Moorish houses, and a wide range of traditional taverns make Tavira Island an idyllic way to experience the many colors of Portugal. Accessible by ferry or water taxi, the 11 km (6.8 mi) long island shelters exotic flora and curious birds, including the seasonal flamingo. You can walk for hours through its dunes and marshes. Stake out a place at one of the campsites, go swimming and soak in some sun, or have a stroll through the island's charming narrow streets. You can stop for a bite at a traditional restaurant. Where to stay in Tavira

Tavira boasts a selection of affordable accommodations. Check yourself into a family-run bed and breakfast or small-time hotel as an affordable option with a quiet atmosphere among the city's array of whitewashed homes. Stay in a guesthouse or private apartment tucked into the residential neighborhoods along the banks of the Gilao River for a great view over the waterway and across to the other side's historical waterfront buildings. Alternatively, you can opt to pay a little more to stay in one of the more upscale hotels located in the residential neighborhoods north of the freeway; these require transportation into town but feature pools, restaurants, and plenty of amenities.

  • not my favourite beach. Too much queuing for the ferry and I wasn't too keen on the restaurant area. The beach itself is as beautiful as all the beaches in the area though so definitely worth a visit  more »

  • A cheap ride by the ferry from Tavira to the island, the island contrasts a busy beach (holiday season), pricey meals and a necessary shade needed from the heat. However, the clear seas of the Atlantic and the waves are great! If you are a beach lover you will enjoy it but expect it to be busy with locals and tourists alike!
  • If you are in the south east of Portugal this is a must visit beach, the boats take you to the island and then you have a huge beach to choose from, sun beds available near the cafes and restaurants or if you are more dating there is nude bathing farther along the beach. This is the one beach every member of my family enjoys.
  • The best beach in Ria Formossa. Eat the doughnut things.
  • Very large beach where you can find a place for your own to enjoy a sunny day.
  • White sand, crystal waters. A lot of restaurants and bars with prices that might be expensive for many, but that are among the usual in the islands around. Too crowded though! There's a camping site and ATM. You can choose to sun bathe by the sea or the ria. Boat both ways 1,50€
