Where to stay in Sintra

For quick and easy access to Sintra's array of authentic buildings and historical sites, stay in the town's World Heritage-listed center perched atop a hill. By staying in the midst of the action, you'll be within walking distance of most of the town's main sights and you'll avoid the challenging parking situation that day-trippers and those staying further outside of the city face. For a real authentic experience, check into one of the many small boutique hotels, guesthouses, or hostels tucked in among the city's winding streets and 19th-century architecture, many of which sit high on the rugged slope near the national palace in mainly residential areas.

  • A wonderful collection of Portuguese art housed in a beautiful building. The museum is small enough that you could see everything in less than an hour, but interesting enough that you could spend longer if you desired. The unifying theme of Portuguese artists means that the pieces are fairly eclectic so if you dislike a piece that there is a good chance that the next will be more to your taste. Finally, I have never been more enthusiastically welcomed to an art museum. Do yourself a favor and set aside an hour to visit this gem of a museum.
