Castelo de Silves, Silves

3.9
#1 of 16 in Things to do in Silves
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. To visit Castelo de Silves and other attractions in Silves, use our Silves trip itinerary site .

  • Another ‘must see’ in Silves and another sight that’s hard to miss. It’s possible to walk all around the ramparts and the views are impressive. It’s well maintained and easily navigated. There’s a caf...  more »
  • This small castle not far from the coast makes for an interesting stop if you're in the area. It is small and nothing spectacular, but the displays are well presented and the renovation is good. There...  more »
  • The castle dominates the town and you can get some great photos from the highway east of the river. The castle interior is not particularly interesting, it is more to be seen from a distance.  more »

  • The castle itself and surrounding town are lovely. A great place to visit if you want to experience something a little different from the standard beach / resort lifestyle of the area. There are also some lovely restaurant to be discovered in and around the castle grounds. My only complaint would be there is very limited information or context regarding the history of the castle. If you're a real historian or culture vulture this may leave you frustrated.
  • This castle has excellent views over Silves, a lovely cafe and a certain atmosphere. There were some falconers there who put on a great display of flying which was enjoyable. Over all the castle was a little sparse and there wasn’t much information on the history of the place but it was quite cheap and had a nice feel to it.
  • Restored castle with a bar restaurant in the centre. Great views from the battlements and random belly dancing and falconry combined performance while we were there, which livened up the visit! Silves itself is a nice little Algarve town, with lots of Storks nesting.
  • Beautiful castle. Closes at 5 pm so don’t be late. Great cafe close by with live music Fri- Sun.
  • I enjoyed touring inside the castle walls. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star rating is because there is a small entrance fee and I have seen so many other great castle ruins in Portugal for free.
