Castelo de Silves, Silves

3.9
#1 of 16 in Things to do in Silves
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. To visit Castelo de Silves and other attractions in Silves, use our Silves trip itinerary site .

  • We visited the Castelo as part of wider excursion and that is part of the reason why I think this review won't do the locale justice. We spent just under two hours here but could have easily spent twi...  more »

  • Great old (but heavily restored) castle. It is fairly inexpensive to get in and has a cafe inside as well as several just outside. It has a public toilet inside. The castle has a complete circuit of walls made of red sandstone. The walk around the walls is beautiful with great views. The castle was originally built by the Almohads who were Berbers. There is a beautiful decorative arch from this period by a ruined bath house. The statue of King Sancho just outside the castle is impressive. Well worth a visit and justifies the long , uphill walk on the cobbled streets.
  • Really nice and well reconstructed Castle. You have to buy a ticket for 2,80 € regular or 1,40 € for students and kids, but it's really worth it. The surrounding is beautiful but the walk up to the castle may be exhausting. I was there off-season, and it wasn't crowded at all, but in season it's maybe crowded.
  • Returned again and took in the fantastic views from the castle walls. Had a good meal in the castle cafe. This year a new attraction bird show at 2pm and 3pm
  • Fascinating imposing edifice with views of surrounding town and countryside from the curtain wall. Limited shade for those with restricted mobility to get into the towers or cooler former underground reservoir which is now exhibition space. Curtain wall perimeter walk is unfenced so younger children will need to be kept close to hand and away from the drop.
  • Lovely place with an amazing inside garden and a great view of the city. Has a cafe with regional cakes and a delicious home made iced tea among a vast option of other items. Could have some more descriptions of the history of the castle and the sections within it. a good place to relax.
