Inspirock Rating:
3.9/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. • We arrived right when it opened at 9 am and I basically had to wait around for someone to arrive to take our entrance fees. We almost felt like we were imposing on them. Obviously there is not a lot o...  read more »
  • This a great castle, we thorouly enjoyed our visit. Fantastic views and great facilities. Only thing I would say is that we paid for the museum but didn't find it in the castle grounds, although there...  read more »
  • This is the largest castle in the Algarve, and its imposing red sandstone shape dominates the Silves skyline. Pretty much all that’s visible is the ramparts, but there is an archaeological dig going o...  read more »
  • Very good castle in great condition. Not a great deal here except a few exhibitions and a decent cafe. A good walk round the ramparts. Entry is only a few euros and the views from the ramparts make it worthwhile.
  • This Castle offers Spectacular Panoramic views, must say a Hardy walk up the hill to the Castle. The Castle is so well designed with just a handful of people guarding, it would be impossible to take, the only issue would be having enough food for a long attempted siege.
  • Large open air castle remains. You can walk the perimeter walls though I noticed that many people seemed a little nervous doing so as there are sudden, unprotected, drops. Lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Sadly lots of construction work going on in the cafe so the noise was unbearable.
  • The castle itself is good for a walk around the walls and the view over the town etc etc but don't bother with the Sunset Secrets as that is a complete shambles
  • A fun, inexpensive way to spend an hour or two. Great views of Silves and the surrounding countryside.
