Castelo de Silves, Silves
(3.8/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. Using our custom trip planner, Silves attractions like Castelo de Silves can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • It is worth a visit, you can nicely over the old walls and then have a nice view. In the courtyard is a small restaurant where they have delicious coffee.

  • Magnificent Castle €2,80 entry by adult Silves Castle was built by the Moors between the 8th century and the 10th century. Also called Castle Al Hamra (the Red), it consists of a crenellated enclosure, red sandstone, occupying an area of 12 hectares. At the entrance to the Castle, we find a statue in tribute to Sancho I, who in 1189 conquered for the first time Silves Almohad occupants, the last Arab Kingdom in the city, which would be permanently expelled in 1242.

  • Although pay ticket to join, I think it's worth, the sites have to be treated and I agree that if pay 2.80 € in this case, the adult. Is a historical site that didn't know, I think it might have more info in it, but is well maintained and has a cafe with plenty of options. At this time had an exhibition of sculptures.

  • Nice castle, great views and cheap entry tickets, it pays to buy the combination ticket also gives access to silves archaeological museum
  • Cafe is in a castle so the surroundings are great. Good food and coffee
  • Wonderful food with live music to just kick back & enjoy. Highly reccomend a visit
  • Crazy expensive for quantity and quality of food/drinks. Glass of their drinks costs 4.5e.
  • Good cafe in the centre of the castle at Silves. Plenty of shaded seating and a few of those big fans with the mist spray so a welcome stop on a very hot day. The cafe serves all the usual food and drink you would expect a Portuguese cafe to serve. Staff were friendly and polite.
