Castelo de Silves, Silves

Ruin · Tourist Spot
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. To visit Castelo de Silves and other attractions in Silves, use our Silves trip itinerary site.

  • If you're into history and real beauty, this is a "must-see"place.Taking the bus from Armancao De Pera(a 25-minute ride) you get your first, very striking view of the red sandstone walls of the...  more »
  • Wow!What an amazing place to visit. It wasnt overcrowded and it felt like the whole castle is just for us. Take a time to have a nice refreshing drink in the coffee shop on the castle grounds.  more »
  • We visited in early June and it was extremely quiet. The castle looks good from the approach and we were keen to see it, however were very disappointed when we got inside. There was next to no...  more »
  • Nice castle, nice views from the top. Not sure about not having a barrier between some of the walkway around and the 20 foot drop, definitely need to keep hold of little ones. But it is nice, nice little spot to eat/drink inside also.
  • Historical. Next to the castle. Good position. Good staff, food and drink. Love the live entertainment. (You would need to reserve a table) The only negative for some people: can only be reached via stone steps.
  • Great tour. Has a lot to see, great sightseeing spots, excellent photography opportunity, lots of info about the old times in the castle and it's reconstruction, and some artifacts and old customs... Nice places to sit and relax for a few hours, on the shade, just listening to birds sung and nothing else... Has public toilets, and a bar/restaurant with good food choices. Child friendly gardens, water fountains, fruit tree's, flower and a nice sculpture area to visit... Wheelchair friendly areas. A must see when in the Silves area...👍
  • It's one of the few Portuguese castles that is not in ruins! It's very well preserved and you can enjoy a beautiful view from up there. It has a good restaurant inside it, and in June and July you can go and watch the sunset!
  • The castle was interesting but lacking safety rails in places and some uneven walkways. You need sturdy shoes. The grounds are stunning and have beautiful fruit trees and plants. The cafe and toilets are good. Lots to see here. Views from battlements are superb.
