Castelo de Silves, Silves

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Ruin
Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. Using our custom trip planner, Silves attractions like Castelo de Silves can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Situated at the top of a hill ( of course) it is a monument worth visiting. Parking can be a real problem, so it is best to park at the large official car park at the bottom of the hill.  more »

  • The castle is really nice and has a beautiful view! Outside looks more beautiful than the inside because there are more ruins. Still a beautiful place to visit for a couple hours and a really nice bar...  more »

  • Interesting long history reasonably well presented. Sensible admission price affording access to 360°views, modern snack bar and toilets. Access and parking not straightforward.
  • Great place to visit. The walls are still intact and you can walk around the inside of the battlements. Entry is cheap and there are explanations in English as well as Portuguese. With the combined ticket you get in the archeology museum as well. Lots of small cafes around the castle and in the town. Less than an hour in the car from albufera.
  • Worth visiting! Entrance was €3,90 pp. For that money you can enter the castle, entrance for the museum and free tickets for a wine tasting! The castle is big. You can walk around on the walls an get a beautiful view on Silves.
  • It's nice what they've done with the place, but there is not too much too see.
  • We had a brief stop in Silves on our tour of the region, and walked to the top of the hill to visit the castle. This castle is unlike anything we had seen on previous European travels (in France, Germany, Netherlands for example), and you could feel the unique history. I wish there had been more plaques and information in the brochure about the castle and it's significance, but we enjoyed walking through it, the clean washrooms, and the views of the surrounding area and city of Silves. Not a long stop, but one we felt was worth while.
