  • Located about two kilometers from the town of San Vicente, signposted before arriving at the village on the road from Funchal to San Vicente. There are a few different caves to which are usually to do with stalactites and stalagmites, since these originated with the cooling of the material ejected by a volcanic eruption. The visit of the caves does not last for half an hour and is done with a guide who speaks Portuguese and English, and is easy to follow. The soil is not too irregular and don't need to duck down almost never. At the end of the visit to the caves is accessed to a small museum about volcanoes, with different types of volcanic rock and photos and explanations. After that is projected an audiovisual about ten minutes about the origin of the Madeira Archipelago, with beautiful images. After you carry to a "elevator", that simulates a descent to the depths of it land, although it only that there are is vibration mild of the soil and sounds. And finally there is a projection in three dimensions on how lives an eruption from the inside of the volcano. In total the visit can last around an hour and is very enjoyable and interesting. We traveled with a five year old boy and this activity did not you heavy. There same there is a bar where you can buy something to eat, like pizza or sandwiches. There is also a little shop with a variety of souvenirs in the path of access to the caves. Recommended and interesting for people with a minimum of curiosity.

  • The tour is guided. It has no charm or magic walking mass in too well landscaped corridors for safety. The lava flows are little impressive and especially the course is very short. We had the impression of a ride on the merry-go-round. The visit of explanatory space is more intended for children and there is little informative. To close all the price is high: 8 euros per person so little interest, there is much more magical through long tunnels during the hiking of the Levada Caldeirão Verde
