#11 of 11 in Nature in Sao Miguel
Pico da Vara is the highest mountain on the Portuguese island of São Miguel, in the Azores archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. It lies in the east of the island in the Serra da Tronqueira range in the municipality of Nordeste. The area around the mountain includes the largest remaining stand of the native laurisilva forest on the island, which is home to the critically endangered endemic bird species, the Azores bullfinch.

It is advisable to go as though pleasant walk at the beginning through forested area, early start but from approximately there are hardly any shadows the half. In addition there are not so many hikers ;) Walking on a well-trodden path narrow part of the. We were on the road when weather is nice, but after several days of rain, it was a very muddy part. Good Footwear is recommended in any case. Above the tree line, we have discovered the rare Priolo (Azores Bullfinch) directly on the way and observed in search of food. This was only possible, because we were still relatively alone. If you quickly run you need 1, 5 h from the parking lot to the top ca.

We approached this walk starting from the square with the map and directions of the route; to reach the starting point should you pay attention to the one wooden sign near the roundabout where the road (dirt road) traveled by car. The hike is marked as "hard" (red bullet), but in our opinion is not so complex, if not the second section, where there is a lot of wind, some mud and the temperatures drop. The difficult consists mainly in the fact that, to reach the top, of course, there's the whole climb. You must bring a k-way, have proper footwear and a change (we didn't find rain, indeed few clouds, but it still is a point often subject to rain!). Surely the satisfaction of reaching the highest peak of the island is incomparable, due to the view from the top.

The trail is easy to hike but due to the rainy days it was muddy and slippery. Still it was fun! Don't forget to bring dry clothes and shoes  more »
