Pego do Inferno, Tavira

Waterfall · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Stop by the site of a spooky local legend at Pego do Inferno, part of a series of nearby waterfalls and pools. Some say a carriage once fell into the pool and was never recovered, thereby creating a portal to the underworld beneath the water. See the waterfall and its lake for yourself, and wander the rugged landscape around the cascade to view the variety of plants that characterize the Algarve's inland portion. Stop by the viewing platforms, or hop in the water for a quick dip. While you'll find parking near the site, you'll still have a short walk to the start of the wooden boardwalk and then down a series of stairs. Our Tavira online day trip planner makes visiting Pego do Inferno and other Tavira attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • To be fair, I think the authorities have done all they can to discourage people from going here - no road signage, apart from a couple of notices warning of danger. It may have been beautiful once...  more »
  • Used to be a lovely place. Paid a return visit . There is no waterfall just stagnant pond . The infrastructure that led to the falls is gone and dangerous manmade paths exist overgrown by shrubbery.....  more »
  • Hard to find. Complicated dangerous access. No waterfall dirty pond with posible sunscreen accumulated on top. In summary DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.  more »
  • Could be an amazing place, and I suppose that the season is dry, but at the moment there is no waterfall, so I'll try another time. But definitely not worth during the summer if its dry and hot.
  • Visited in mid September 2019. No waterfall but plenty of water to use the rope to jump into the water. Wonderful!
  • Beautiful waterfall. I imagine this place will be busy in summer, I recommend going in September or October.
  • Difficult to find and even when you can see it, not easy to get to. When we visited in May there was no waterfall, just a pool. Barely any space around to sit so a handful of people and the place is full. But it's pretty and very natural and worth a walk. Take water shoes if you want to swim.
  • Small water hole, quite outside and hard to find but still rather crowded on hot days. The water fall was dried out the time we visited and we had a hard time locating the right way to get there! Gmaps navigating through private plantations doesn't help either. From the parking place it's at least 5-10min walk on narrow footpaths without any signs. We didn't bother going down to the lake as it was so crowded, but the people there definitely enjoyed themselves.
