  • The Santa Maria da Feira Castle is truly spectacular. A very old and grandiose structure on a hill with Barbican, well preserved walls and the main part with its towers. It soon becomes clear by the size and structure that was an important strategic point. To see if you are in the area.

  • The initial construction of the castle dates from the 11th century (or earlier), being the predominant Gothic style. With the amendments and additions, the Castle expresses other styles, particularly the Manueline. Added to the Castle, is the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, which clashes with the prevailing Gothic style. In addition to the grandeur of the Castle are the keep, the water cisterns and kitchens with their huge fireplaces. Is very well maintained and treated by the City Council. Each year, in December, takes place an activity called Perlim, organized by a Spanish company, which makes the delights of the newest and not only, mainly Spanish and Portuguese. Probably, the Town Hall, to cede space to the Perlim, find here a good form of financing for maintenance of the entire space and promotes tourism in the region. Conclusion: either Perlim or by the height of the rest of the year, fully justifies a visit to the Castle (since the day chosen did not rain). At the foot of the hill where the castle is, sufficient parking during the year. At the time of the Perlim, already in short supply more, but is always room within 10 minutes walk from the entrance.

  • I just love this place. It’s historical and very nice place to go. I went while it was happening a big medieval fair
  • Nice quiet place to go and have a walk. Well kept and not crowded.
  • I loved visiting my local castle, especially during the yearly midieval fair
  • Excellent place to visit. Be sure to watch the intro movie when you first enter the castle to get to know its history. Climb to the top to get an amazing view to the city of Santa Maria da Feira.
  • This castle is among the most beautiful castles in Portugal and its an emblematic of Portuguese medieval military architecture. It used to serve as a connection between Lisbon and Braga and in the middle of the 9th century (868), Alfonso III of León created the administrative and military region, that he called Terra de Santa Maria, he laid its defences in the military fortress that existed there, in Civitas Sancta Mariae. It contains a quite big protected area surrounding the castle which its also great to visit!
