  • Located in a quiet residential area this beautiful synagogue worth the detour. A beautiful building large and luminous. As bright and warm interior. A welcome and a very interesting guide. The revival of a Jewish hope with the new generations...

  • I say that in the title, because this synagogue was inaugurated in 1938, the genocide of Germany. against the Jews say genocide because that was not a war, was a full-blown genocide. And, in Porto, an act took place freedom of faith. Detail!

  • We had 8 people off a Duoro River cruise take a privately-arranged Jewish Heritage tour in Porto on July 17th. It was an excellent tour, the highlight being the Synagogue Kaoorie-Mekor Haim. Hugo, the...  more »

  • This was by far the best part of our trip to Porto. Just ring the door bell and you'll be welcomed into a peaceful and educating environment. Joanna, our guide, was just brilliant: we learnt more about Portuguese history in those few hours than we did on our entire trip. Moreover, the synagogue is just beautiful. You don't need to be interested in religion to enjoy this day out. If you're interested in history then this is the place to be!
  • It's certainly worth the visit, just make sure you book ahead. Also note the fine irony, the Synagogue is guarded by a German Shepard dog.
  • I went there to buy some matzas for the Seder and unfortunately they only had some expensive ones left (18€!!!) and they couldn't make me a receipt. The place looks nice, but I didn't have the chance to take a tour. It seems not to be accessible to wheelchairs and strollers at all. The best thing was the beautiful German Shepard who is guarding the entrance, he is a very friendly dog, once you are inside the gate of the synagogue.
  • Lovely tour! The guide is very knowledgeable and friendly, answering clearly to all the questions (even the dumb ones).
  • Nice synagogue

Where to stay in Porto

Portugal's second city offers a healthy variety and quantity of accessible accommodations. The historical city center on the northern bank of the River Douro teems with hotel options, ranging from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, which often have shared rooms, to upscale, luxury hotels housed in larger buildings and packed with amenities. All of these options place you conveniently close to the town's main sights, including churches, historical squares, and more. On top of that, many hotels on the northern bank boast good views from their hilltop vantage points. If you want to save big on cost, it's worth considering a more low-key hostel or small hotel on the less-popular southern bank.
