Serralves, Porto

4.1
#1 of 13 in Museums in Porto
In a minimalist building, Serralves hosts frequently changing contemporary art exhibits. This prominent European contemporary circuit, part of the most-visited museum in Portugal, aims to bring attention to art and the fragile environment. Built on 18 hectares (44 acres) dotted with modern sculptures, the complex includes a 14-gallery museum, farmland, a shop, a bookstore, and several cafes. Use an audio guide at the museum to learn about its frequently changing exhibits and activities--there is not a single permanent exhibit at the site. • Fantastic gardens and very well taken care of, with a variety of mature trees. I advise you to do the night tour "there is light in the Park". It's a magical visit!

  • Managed by a private foundation, there are two main features you should not miss. The museum of modern art has rotating exhibitions, so every time you visit you will learn something new, but do not forget to visit the amazing library. On the outside, the gardens themselves are worth a visit on their own, it is an amazing place.
  • You have to pay 5€ but it's well worth it! The gardens are enormous and are very diverse. You'll certainly enjoy it.
  • The Serralves foundation is a landmark in Porto, and both its art collections and its gardens are a must visit on its own
  • One of the greatest location to visit in Porto, great gardens for a walk and a lot of seasonal activities and celebration like Autumn Party, Serralves em Festa.
  • Fantastic museum and beautiful gardens. Don't miss the "Serralves em festa" anual event.

Where to stay in Porto

Portugal's second city offers a healthy variety and quantity of accessible accommodations. The historical city center on the northern bank of the River Douro teems with hotel options, ranging from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, which often have shared rooms, to upscale, luxury hotels housed in larger buildings and packed with amenities. All of these options place you conveniently close to the town's main sights, including churches, historical squares, and more. On top of that, many hotels on the northern bank boast good views from their hilltop vantage points. If you want to save big on cost, it's worth considering a more low-key hostel or small hotel on the less-popular southern bank.
