  • The vine for the famous wine Porto does not occur in this city, but close, in the Alto Douro... and is fermented in the cellars of Vila Nova da Gaia! Also in Gaia is this Museum, but from Porto is exported to the rest of the world, taking its designation of origin as well.

  • This museum did not bother update the website to say they are closed due to relocation. So we walked an hour to get there only to find it closed.  more »
  • My husband and I really expected to see more exhibits. It was just presented in quite a boring way for you to just walk round and read all the info. Wish we had gone to the tram museum instead.  more »

  • This was a downer museum. If you want to take a break from the Mediterranean heat, go to this museum. If you have a Lisbon card, this will be a freebie. The artifacts are minimal and the only saving grace is the video. They do have a bathroom if you are in need of it after a long walk along the water. It will take you a good 10 minutes to go through the place. It does give you a good history of the area but it isn't MOMA so don't expect much.
  • Tiny but cute museum, cheap ticket (2.20€, free for students)
  • Entrance on weekend is free. Just quick history of wine in Porto. Good to see.
  • It's tiny. Most of information can be googled. Like who and when started the tradition of port wine, how it became popular and helped the town's development. Probably it could be more attractive if more of exposition will be dedicated to the port wine itself, how it's made, in what way its barnds are different (with possibility to taste the difference). P.S.: looks like the attendance is free during weekend.
  • Far from the city centre, poor quality and small content

Where to stay in Porto

Portugal's second city offers a healthy variety and quantity of accessible accommodations. The historical city center on the northern bank of the River Douro teems with hotel options, ranging from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, which often have shared rooms, to upscale, luxury hotels housed in larger buildings and packed with amenities. All of these options place you conveniently close to the town's main sights, including churches, historical squares, and more. On top of that, many hotels on the northern bank boast good views from their hilltop vantage points. If you want to save big on cost, it's worth considering a more low-key hostel or small hotel on the less-popular southern bank.
