Mercado do Bolhao, Porto

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Flea Market
Bustling with butchers, craft shops, fruit stands, and more, Mercado do Bolhao serves as one of the city's most historically important and active commercial centers. Stop by the covered market, housed in a Neoclassical building from 1914, and wend your way through its two floors of stalls and vendors. You'll find a wide array of fish, agricultural products, and souvenirs for sale--all staples of the city and the region. Listen for the cries of the different vendors as you move through the center, as each one traditionally has his own distinct yell designed to bring in customers and ward off competitors. If you're in the mood for a bite, stop by one of the local cafes, or grab some traditional Portuguese fried tripe from a butcher shop. Our Porto holiday planner makes visiting Mercado do Bolhao and other Porto attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • A glimpse into the past. Must have been a thriving commercial centre in days gone by. Very interesting architecture. Hard to see the vendors of fruit and vegetables prospering. It needs lots of money ...  more »
  • If you want to step back in time then take the time to pop into this fascinating fresh fruit/veg/fish/meat/flowers/local produce market in the heart of Porto. Its soon to be totally renovated, closing...  more »
  • Large multilevel market with the usual fruits, vegetables, restaurants, and you-name-its. Friendly vendors all around. A bit dingy, but that adds to the atmosphere. Should not be missed.  more »

  • It used to be great but now it's old, dirty, lacks diversity and stores and it looks poor. There was so much potential that was wasted within this market. In any case you should go check it out. It has better days I'm which the market is full of life.
  • Great sense of place, clearly an important market for locals, with great products at low prices. Every merchant there was very nice to us. Must see, not as a touristy polished place but more as an insight into Porto life.
  • A wonderful authentic local market where you can also sit, relax and enjoy delicious food and wines!
  • Good place to have foods and souvenirs for cheap price. The eggtart here was just 0.5 euro, half price of the one in the city center. And you can buy souvenirs cheap here. I bought magnets and the pencil case made of cork.
  • I expected more... but worth to see. Very nice souvenirs you can buy there from the locals
