Liberdade Square, Porto

4.3
#11 of 40 in Sightseeing in Porto
Landmark Tourist Spot
Cutting through the heart of the city, Liberdade Square recalls the grand boulevards of Paris. Flanked by stately buildings and elegant hotels, the wide street features one of the city's most recognizable landmarks, a granite town hall famous for its 70 m (230 ft) tall bell tower. The boulevard's central square, featuring the towering equestrian statue of King Peter IV, serves as the site of frequent art festivals and exhibits. Try to avoid the heavy traffic that often chokes this avenue by exploring the area on foot or by bicycle. Literary fans may want to stop by the statue of writer Almeida Garrett in front of the town hall. Where to stay in Porto

Portugal's second city offers a healthy variety and quantity of accessible accommodations. The historical city center on the northern bank of the River Douro teems with hotel options, ranging from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, which often have shared rooms, to upscale, luxury hotels housed in larger buildings and packed with amenities. All of these options place you conveniently close to the town's main sights, including churches, historical squares, and more. On top of that, many hotels on the northern bank boast good views from their hilltop vantage points. If you want to save big on cost, it's worth considering a more low-key hostel or small hotel on the less-popular southern bank.
