Garrafeira do Carmo, Porto

4.9
#4 of 30 in Shopping in Porto
Nicknamed "Porto's Wine Cathedral", Garrafeira do Carmo has been providing customers with a broad selection of Portuguese and foreign wines since 1990. Choose from an array of domestic table wines, including Douro, Alentego, and Setubal, as well as treasured port wines. The shop also offers rare and precious bottles from its own private collection, with vintages dating back as far as 1834. Above all, though, the proprietors and shopkeepers pride themselves on their personalized service, one of the reasons numerous travel guides recommend this shop. Use Inspirock's suggestions to plan your Porto trip and find the best activities and attractions for your vacation.

Garraferia small, authentic and humble, good prices compared to other wineries. Very pleased with the advice, so I recommend it 100%. This is the place you are looking for if you want to buy green Vinhos, ports or other Portuguese wines unless sell you the bike.

Attention 100% correct, honest, friendly people that you advise on the best wines of Porto without going to the most expensive. Up to 2 or 3 wine tasting they offer without commitment (we already had paid the wines when they offered it to us) 100% recommended.

  • Great prices, great service. no doubt the best place to buy port. you get George, with GREAT knowledge to be on your side, is the best thing you can hope for at a store. I will be back, for sure.
  • Skip the overpriced gift shops at the port house cellars across the river and stock up here. Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a great selection of ports by big names and small producers.
  • Very very nice wine shop. The people are polite and can answer all questions regarding porto wines. Great varaiety of different wines and other beverages.
  • A wine cellar in a tourist district that serves the locals as well as the tourists with good advice and a genuine smile
  • Fabulous...had only slight idea of what we were looking for. He spoke excellent English. Asked questions, made suggestions. Easily spent 30 minutes in his store. We enjoyed a mini taste test, which was extremely helpful in making our choice. A great little store, stocked full of varieties. Well priced also. Worth the walk to get there. Very friendly staff. He even wrapped our bottles for travel, advising of duties & taxes if we shipped home. Go there!

Where to stay in Porto

Portugal's second city offers a healthy variety and quantity of accessible accommodations. The historical city center on the northern bank of the River Douro teems with hotel options, ranging from budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, which often have shared rooms, to upscale, luxury hotels housed in larger buildings and packed with amenities. All of these options place you conveniently close to the town's main sights, including churches, historical squares, and more. On top of that, many hotels on the northern bank boast good views from their hilltop vantage points. If you want to save big on cost, it's worth considering a more low-key hostel or small hotel on the less-popular southern bank.
