Where to stay in Ponta Delgada

As the island of Sao Miguel's primary tourist hotspot and center of activity, Ponta Delgada boasts perhaps the widest array of the lodging options in the Azores. Check into one of the luxury hotels in the core, closer to the ocean, to treat yourself to swimming pools, spa facilities, and a host of other amenities. Alternatively, try a smaller guesthouse or private villa slighty farther from the sea to save a bit on costs while still keeping yourself within reach of the area's churches, museums, and coastal fortress. The city itself is relatively compact, so most of the hotels in and around the city center provide easy access to its historical sites and tourist attractions by foot.

  • OK it's about 10 minutes walk from the centre but worth the walk. Massive trees and a couple of interesting grottos plus two ponds (full of croaking frogs when we visited). If you like informal garden...  more »

  • Big park with a lot of vegetation. A lot of small caves, park is not "flat" - you will go on trails up and down, some of the trail leading under other trails.
  • Stunning urban park and arboretum- the man made landscape might just leave you rubbing your eyes in disbelief-amazing what could be built from slabs of volcanic rock a hundred years ago! And the trees - such a collection! The Australian fig will blow your mind. The scale of it is madness. A great half hour stroll up and down - azaleas and agapanthus line the walks. Do beware that local teens from the high school nearby do seem to frequent the little grottoes and caves and engage in some flagrante delicto after classes here.... (yeah. We stumbled across 2 couples on BOTH times to the park - geez.)
  • Beautiful clean Park within the city
  • Very nice garden to walk and lost in internal between centuries-old trees and labyrinths with various types of plants and flowers.
