Baleal Beach, Peniche

Beach
Once a major site of medieval Portugal's whaling industry, Baleal Beach today is a popular beach and surfing destination. Technically an island, the area is connected to the mainland via a thin, raised strip of sand. Explore the beaches to lounge in the sun or go for a dip in the calmer waters. You'll find that surfers frequent the shoreline, as varying land and rock formations mean that the area also boasts more advanced waves. You can brush up on your surfing skills or learn new ones at one of the surf schools nearby. Don't miss seeing the ruins of a former fortress from the Napoleonic occupation of the country. Put Baleal Beach into our Peniche travel itinerary planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • I loved spending drive on the road to almost-ilha do Baleal, with beaches on one side and the other. Very nice to see the ocean and the distance the Berlenga island.

  • Praia do Baleal beach is very beautiful and well looked after, with very clean water. Well organized and frequented by all sorts of people, is a good option in this part of the country. Is reasonably served by bars and restaurants. The only "but" is the temperature of the water, always very cold, even at other times of the year. Good for water sports.
