  • The Castelo de Penalva, was built by taking advantage of the rocky terrain of the site, where the rocks are part of the defensive structure to your Tower is gracious and with a great overview. It is worth the detour to observe one of the castles that was part of the set of Defense of the city of Coimbra

  • Worth the visit in this beautiful castle which actually is a small walled medieval town in Penela. There is no cost to enter the site and has beautiful views over the Valley to Lousã. In a dominant position on a limestone hill, integrated calling line of the Mondego, and have the function of advance guard of Coimbra, at the time of the Reconquista. Along with the castle of Montemor-o-Velho, constitute the most significant testimony of your type, the period in the region. Its walls are rewarded with a beautiful view of the town, and the far East, the serra da Lousã. The origin of your name is controversial, attributed by some authors to primitive Celtic peoples. A local tradition States that, when conquered by d. Afonso Henriques (1112-1185), to penetrate the village through a ruse, the sovereign would have incited the robbers exclaiming: Courage! We're with the foot in it!. Seems more accurate, however, Penela a diminutive of penha, local elected to the primitive fortification.

  • I visited at Christmas time. I was surprised with the exposition of cribs in the Chapel, not neglecting the landscape and the local animation. Very good.
