Free access, the castle of Penela is small and has the Church of St. Michael in your interior. Unfortunately it was closed (Saturday morning) and without any information of when opened. However, some beautiful views of Penela and nearby villages. Deserves a stop to enjoy the site. Recommend a visit to the tourist office near the entrance of this castle.

Lovely castle to take a walk to from the village or surrounding towns. The castle itself is open to walk around and the views from the top are spectacular.
Castle of Penela (Castelo de Penela) is located on a high Hill in the eponymous village in the District of Coimbra. It is believed that the first castle on this site was built by the Moors. During the time of the Reconquista, he was captured and had played an important role: he was part of the so-called line of the Mondego, i.e. served as an advance for the protection of Coimbra. But, in addition, he served as the residence of one of the Portuguese counts, who ruled these lands. But after the expulsion of the Moors Castle many times was in the thick of things. Here was born and died in the King of Portugal, Afonso IV. During the period of crisis in 1383-1385 Castle moved to the side of the Spaniards, for which its commandant was shot and killed local commoner. With regard to its development, the Castle has several lines of Defense. Located in the Centre of St. Michael's Church-the patron saint of the town (Igreja de São Miguel de Penela). The castle was surrounded by fourteen towers. Up to the present day survived only four. Penela, like many other castles, to the 17th century lost its military value, after which the local residents began to use it as a quarry for their buildings. The castle was restored already in our time.
The castle of Penela has an ancient history dating back to the 9th century. The village is worth knowing. The restaurant d. Sisnando has excellent gastronomy of the region with great wines
