The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval castle located in the civil parish of Santa Maria, São Pedro e Sobral da Lagoa, in the municipality of Óbidos, Portuguese district of Leiria.HistoryÓbidos had its foundation in the existence of a fortified settlement, likely over the Luso-Roman castro and Roman oppidum (then civitas) on the hilltop, that was the mysterious Eburobrittium, once cited by Pliny the Elder as being situated between Collipo (near present-day Leiria) and Olisipo (Lisbon). Archeological surveys later resulted in the discovery of a forum, baths and other Roman structures near the settlement. The area was later settled by the Lusitanos (since the 4th century BC) and Romans in the first century, but later occupied by Visigoths during the 5th and 6th century and Muslims, who were responsible for fortifying the town in the 8th century.

Where to stay in Obidos

Just outside the medieval walls that have long protected the town, Obidos' range of lodging options near its historical center provides easy access to winding streets and main tourist sights by foot. Many of the hotels in the center are housed in historical buildings and mansions rather than typical cookie-cutter international chains, yet they still offer plenty of amenities including pools, restaurants, and comfortable rooms. Obidos in particular also features a sizeable array of private rooms and villas for rent, so consider staying at one of them to get away from the traditional hotel scene--you may even score accommodations in a historical Portuguese home.

  • The castle is now a very fancy pousada (hotel), one of the first in Portugal to convert an historic structure into a hotel. And you can sneak in if you aren't looking stereotypically touristy or have ...  more »
  • Obidos is a small city so one might rightfully expect it to have a small castle. The castle is currently being used as a hotel. It is in remarkably good condition.  more »
  • Wonderful little small medieval town with fascinating wall and castle. Castle is overall well preserved Worth the stop, the tourist congestion, and the semi treacherous ambulation on the cobblestones.  more »

  • Inside the castle provide a wide open view to the nature and walking up along the tall wall can be an exquisite choice to experience it. Then left not much to see for the rest of ruins.
  • I really liked that you can walk the city walls at any time with no entry fees.
  • Beautiful structure. I did not get in but from the outside it's amazing.
  • Spectacular castle! And the town is even more spectacular. I am so glad our local friend took us to Obidos!!!
  • Great Castle surrounded by long fortress. The best way to explore this place is to take a walk through edges of these walls.
