Obidos Castle, Obidos

(4.7/5 based on 850+ reviews on the web)
The Castle of Óbidos is a well-preserved medieval castle located in the civil parish of Santa Maria, São Pedro e Sobral da Lagoa, in the municipality of Óbidos, Portuguese district of Leiria.HistoryÓbidos had its foundation in the existence of a fortified settlement, likely over the Luso-Roman castro and Roman oppidum (then civitas) on the hilltop, that was the mysterious Eburobrittium, once cited by Pliny the Elder as being situated between Collipo (near present-day Leiria) and Olisipo (Lisbon). Archeological surveys later resulted in the discovery of a forum, baths and other Roman structures near the settlement. The area was later settled by the Lusitanos (since the 4th century BC) and Romans in the first century, but later occupied by Visigoths during the 5th and 6th century and Muslims, who were responsible for fortifying the town in the 8th century.

  • A fortification that probably dates back to the time of the Moors and was conquered by the Portuguese in the 12th century. The castle was badly damaged in the 1755 earthquake and suffered no reconstruction. Its walls allow walking tourists, but with risk of falling, because there is no protection. Its stones are witnesses of history that spans the centuries.

  • Promote this like our son. See the sights and have a better understanding of the location of the Village. Essential to be careful and closely monitor the kids!!

  • It's like a trip back in time, the walls and the Castle are gorgeous, the possibility to walk on the ramparts is an experience not to be missed, even though there is no security. The Castle, although beautiful, could be best exploited for tourism, left one wanting more.
