  • Óbidos is a walled, medieval town in which the visitor is invited to wander through the maze of its narrow streets lined by beautiful houses and churches, and back in time. The Museum exhibits sacred art, including works of sculpture and painting, and has a canvas signed by the famous painter Josefa d´obidos (1630-1684). It is also a valuable collection of French and English weapons of the Peninsular War, baroque furniture, architectural remains and Roman Archaeology.

Where to stay in Obidos

Just outside the medieval walls that have long protected the town, Obidos' range of lodging options near its historical center provides easy access to winding streets and main tourist sights by foot. Many of the hotels in the center are housed in historical buildings and mansions rather than typical cookie-cutter international chains, yet they still offer plenty of amenities including pools, restaurants, and comfortable rooms. Obidos in particular also features a sizeable array of private rooms and villas for rent, so consider staying at one of them to get away from the traditional hotel scene--you may even score accommodations in a historical Portuguese home.
