O Sitio, Nazare

4.8
#2 of 13 in Things to do in Nazare
Resting atop a seaside cliff, O Sitio presents a collection of religious buildings and is a hugely popular site for pilgrims from around the globe. Hitch a ride on the funicular, or hike your way up to the summit, where you'll find medieval fortifications, 17th-century churches, and modern shrines. Wander the courtyards and plazas surrounded by ornate structures, basilicas, and statues. Feel free to stop in and pay your respects at one of the many chapels. Be sure to walk over to the edge of the rocky outcropping, which sits 110 m (361 ft) above the ocean for a view of the sea and coastline. Completely different from Nazaré below! It is very colonial, different! We got cable car and it's great!

Stay 1 night to visit Nazare. Here everyone goes to sea, but the sea we see it all through the week we preferred to turn the upper part of the city. You take the elevator (€2.40 round trip per person, 1 year and a half old daughter free. The buggies come quietly) to O Sitio, breathtaking views from every corner, to get to this quaint square ... Cathedral, musicians, women with traditional costumes that sell dried fruits, small shops and bars everywhere. A hike to the Lighthouse is a must.

If you're passing in Nazare ' you should not miss a visit to Sitio reached on foot, by car or with a "funicular" (about 5 minutes). The square is very beautiful, features the fisherwomen and costumed fishermen selling dried fruit (good), 10-15 minutes walk you reach the Fort of San Miguel with its lighthouse which overlooks the ocean and the famous Praia do Norte, from where you can admire the terrifying Big Wave (not in the summer though). Always pulls quite windy, so bring a jacket and a sweatshirt (even in August), visiting the deserves. Super recommended.
