Parque Natural do Alvao, Mondim de Basto

#4 of 13 in Outdoors in Vila Real District
The Nature Park of Alvão is a protected area founded in 1983, and located in the municipalities of Mondim de Basto and Vila Real, in the Tâmega and Douro Subregions of northern Portugal. Although the smallest of Portugal's nature parks, it extends through 72.2km2 of mountainous land, populated by approximately 700 locals.HistoryThe nature park was created on 8 June 1983 under terms of decree-law 237/83, as a classified nature park.In order to support the conservation of nature, a resolution of the Council of Ministers (142/97), dated 28 August 1997, integrated Alvão into a broader area of classification under terms of the European Union's Natura 2000 designation: Sítio Alvão-Marão como (Sítio TCON0003 – Alvão-Marão). Under this arrangement community directives, such as those for bird species (79/409/CEE, 2 April) and habitats (92/43/CEE, 21 May) were included within the framework, in order to contribute to the conservation of habitats and species, their respective flora and fauna, considered under threat, within the European Union.GeographyThe Nature Park is located in the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro provinces, in the district Vila Real, divided between the municipalities of Vila Real (parishes of Borbela, Lamas de Olo and Vila Marim) and Mondim de Basto, occupying an area of 7220 hectares or 72.2km2.

  • I didn't do the whole route, but I saw water after 1.5 km. Seriously, don't water the water that supposedly is clear as on the beaches ... Take water to drink on the way. It's hard to cabritar but after being with them from sauce "pays off.

  • The route begins in the Church of Ermelo, it is not easy to park the car, because the roads are narrow. Recommend this route in heat, lead shorts (to swim). First kilometers 5 km must be traversed by the fresh, are always rising. Breathtaking landscapes, the rockets also help! Always with the fingers crossed of Ermelo. In the top Piocas, ponds with possibility of some nice dives and place to have a picnic. Anyway, always along the banks of rio Olo, we can have coffee or a drink in the Cafe at Varzigueto. After this locality the course is downhill, one more dip in the low Piocas. Finally we come to Ermelo, recommend Cafe restaurant Sabores do Alvão, in my case a homemade sausage sandwiches, excellent.

  • A wonderful place to wander. The Fisgas do Ermelo are perfect for hiking and during breaks you can have a swim in the river.
  • An amazing natural preserve! Excellent views and places to visit!
  • One of the best places to go in the area! Nice hikes, beautiful viewpoints and a waterfall :)
  • Beautiful and empty park. A true gem in western Europe. The park is small and has a limited number of trails, but is well worth a visit.
  • One of the most amazing parks in whole Portugal. A must to visit for nature and hicking lovers.
