Pulo do Lobo is a waterfall 17 km north of Mértola, in the Lower Alentejo region of Portugal. It is the highest waterfall in Southern Portugal. Its name means "wolf's leap" in English; it was said that only a brave man or a wild animal when chased could leap over the gorge that was created by the waterfall.

This waterfall is located at an altitude of between 33 and 35 metres in a very narrow gorge in the River Guadiana.
Pulo do Lobo is the most dramatic stretch of the Guadiana , where the "river boils between harsh walls, the rushing of water, hit, flow and wind gnawing a millimeter per century per millennium, a nothing in eternity" wrote as José Saramago, one of Portugal's most famous writers.

The Pulo do Lobo is made by the guadiana river which separates Spain and Portugal. The waterfall is a very majestic sight and is full of native wildlife.

  • You get there after a couple miles of unpaved road. It isn't stunning, but certainly a nice view. Worth the visit, if you have time to spend around.  more »
  • A peaceful and interesting site to visit. Flowers and the birdlife are of great interest here and its a fine place to picnic in the heart of the Portugese countryside  more »
  • Off the beaten track, nice stroll down to the rapids. Certainly worth the detour via the unpaved road.  more »

  • Very calm place. Good spot to see wild life.
  • A must see if you stay around. You can get there by car or leave it in a parking area 1.5km before the falls
  • What a great trip this was! Paved roads most of the way and dirt track just for the last 1.5 km. Really spectacular waterfall, surprisingly, as it was so hot and the middle of summer. Very unusual rock formations and great scenery.
  • Pretty natural setting. Wonderful sights!
  • Another great spot on the Guadiana. The east side access is a very steep walk down an old gravel track, whereas the west side access has a concrete track going right down making access much easier, plus there is a viewing platform. From the east side it's still very interesting but you need a walking pole or good balance to get up and down, and at the bottom you can't directly view the main part of the waterfall, while people opposite stand for ages looking amazed taking photos ;) Check out the satellite photo and you'll see the round viewing platform on the west.
