#1 of 84 in Things to do in Portalegre District
Castle Tourist Spot
Constructed atop a rocky outcropping overlooking the rugged landscape of Alentejo, Castelo de Marvao serves as a well-preserved example of medieval architecture and an important part of Portugal's military past. Visit the fortified castle, dating from the 13th century, to get a sense of its strategic position on high ground just 13 km (8 mi) from the Spanish border. Explore the walled settlement surrounding the site, complete with gardens, living quarters, and a church, all of which relied on the castle for protection. Climb the complex's imposing fortifications, and don't miss the chance to ascend the sturdy bastion tower for a view of the surrounding countryside. This provides an even better opportunity to understand the fortress' advantageous and nearly inaccessible position. Be sure to wander among the different sections of the castle, including the keep, the battlements, and its rings of defensive towers. • The castle stands on top of a mountain and there's a small village just beside the castle, also inside the stone walls, that go around the castle. You can wander around the village and in front of the...  more »
  • The walk around the citadel was windswept, romantic, and picturesque, well worth an over night stay and the drive to reach this isolated place. Amazing views, fabulous sunsets!  more »
  • Very probably the best kept tourist secret. Ever. Mediaeval Europe at its very best. The views, the castle, the town. It's all breathtaking. Worth a detour to visit. Well worth a detour, in fact.  more »

  • The castle is beautiful and well kept. There was a paper tour that was a bit hard to follow but they are available in many different languages.
  • Castelo de Marvão is a must see if you're in the area. Great walk and a deep insight into the history of the zone. Furthermore, and due to its geographical characteristics you'll also enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
  • Worth the visit. The castle is in very good state and view from the towers is fantastic. Free entrance after 19h.
  • One of the really unique places where the frontier is still felt.
  • My favorite spot in Portugal, almost in the clouds, looking down on both Portugal and Spain. The scenery is breathtaking and the restoration of the castle grounds is done with such artful care. A long side trip but so worthwhile.
