Wildlife Area
Green cliffs, red stone chasms, and sharp rocks protruding from the ocean foam make Ponta de Sao Lourenco a wonder that is virtually free from human influence. The area overlooks the north and south parts of the island, and on particularly clear days you can see Porto Santo in the distance. Follow a wooden boardwalk along the ridge over secluded beaches, ocean grottos, and volcanic cliffs. You'll cross valleys lined with palm trees and reach heights of 200 m (650 ft), where only the air separates you from the ocean surface. Bring plenty of water. Using our international travel planner, Machico attractions like Ponta de Sao Lourenco can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Rather long walk but not binding between enchanting landscapes and wild. One of the most beautiful parts of the island, don't miss it! Tip: comfortable shoes, camera and something to make up for that by the wind!

  • Is a walking/taken of more small and accessible, although it is time consuming to complete. The views are fantastic, almost always on cliffs over the sea. With clear you can see in the distance the desertas Islands.

  • This is certainly our favorite spot/walk on Madeira island. With each step there was a totally new world... Beautiful rocks, reefs, views... Definitely must see!  more »

  • Absolutely stunning views of the Atlantic. Nice 2 hour trek across 5 Hills to the edge for the island. Would recommend spending the whole day here.
  • Lovely walk and breathtaking views, well trodden path. Was very busy on the day we went
  • One of the best place to see in Madeira! Absolutely beautiful. Count around 4h for the whole walk.
  • Great walk with wonderful views of the ocean on both sides of Madeira. Steep cliffs, but most of the time with fences.
  • Nice place, but there very windy. Visited in December. Good to wear like "onion" :) And take something to drink with you.
