Mata Nacional do Bussaco, Luso

(600+ reviews on the web)
National Park Nature / Park
Set within the walls of a historical monastery complex, Mata Nacional do Bussaco stands as one of the country's top preserved natural areas. Visit the park and explore its 105 hectares (259 acres) of thickets and greenery, comprising nearly 700 plant species. Guided trail tours are available in English, and each offers a varying degree of hiking difficulty, as well as a focus on a certain part of the forest. Stop by the ornate church and little-used royal palace. While the forest is only 2 km (1.2 mi) from nearby Luso, the walk is uphill and extremely steep, so those with mobility issues should avoid going by foot. • Having some free time, we came to this area to walk in the woods, and enjoy the open-air spaces, in nice weather. The place is large, with nice walking paths and an array of options to explore for the...  more »
  • I loved the forest trails even more than the famous cascade stairs. The free map isn't clear at all.  more »
  • Not far from the University city – Coimbra you must go to Buçaco to see one of the most beautiful world forests. After a walk have a drink or a meal in the charming palace hotel. Enjoy!  more »

  • Certainly one of the most beautiful forest/garden of the country. The Palace is gorgeous (Manuelino style I think) but the walk in the wood is also worth the effort. Don't forget that if you start from the top, all you go down the hill you will have to climb up! There could be better signs to help people find their way easily but looking for your way back is also part of the experience...
  • Fantastic park, you feel in a mixture between tropical forest and fairytale castle yard. hard to walk if not fit. Not recommended for buggy, wheelchair or crutches.
  • Impressing palace, misterious enviroment, nice walk throught the forest.
  • It's okay if you're around and want to spend some hours in the nature.
  • Beautiful place to spend a day in the middle of nature. Beautiful views
