Mata Nacional do Bussaco, Luso

(4.7/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Set within the walls of a historical monastery complex, Mata Nacional do Bussaco stands as one of the country's top preserved natural areas. Visit the park and explore its 105 hectares (259 acres) of thickets and greenery, comprising nearly 700 plant species. Guided trail tours are available in English, and each offers a varying degree of hiking difficulty, as well as a focus on a certain part of the forest. Stop by the ornate church and little-used royal palace. While the forest is only 2 km (1.2 mi) from nearby Luso, the walk is uphill and extremely steep, so those with mobility issues should avoid going by foot. • I have visited spaces more attractive and better care (even of Winter as was the case). I found the price of access over the top. There is a lack of support services.

  • A nice discovery, a forest of trees exotic and exceptional wonder! We went there late February - early March and what a surprise on the mild temperatures and the species. A festival of mimosas in flowers and eucalyptus grandiose! A ride nice, a must to do in car or on foot, solo, couple or with kids, a place all simply superb! Hint: to pay the € 5 entrance by car, Park in the parking lot of the Puerta da Sula and get down to the palace on foot in order to take beautiful photos of the area and retrieve a small card with the railways of walks (not super well signposted) nature lovers, go for it!

  • Certainly one of the most beautiful forest/garden of the country. The Palace is gorgeous (Manuelino style I think) but the walk in the wood is also worth the effort. Don't forget that if you start from the top, all you go down the hill you will have to climb up! There could be better signs to help people find their way easily but looking for your way back is also part of the experience...
  • Sitio lindíssimo. Aconselho a fazerem os percursos pedestres. Valem bem a pena
