  • It's a strange Museum linking Lisbon and ideally places 5 chapters in the history of water supply in the municipality of Lisbon. What I saw and what I describe here is the Reservatorio from Mae d'agua das Amoreiras, located a few meters of the station of Rato. We can also be reached by buses 706.709 .727 and 758. Designed in 1746 by the Hungarian architect Carlo Mardel to receive and distribute the waters of acquadotto das Aguas Livres. Inside the building there is a large deep basin 7.5 m deep and with a capacity of 5500 cubic metres. There are two galleries (Loreto and Esperanca) for water distribution in public fountains, factories, monasteries and houses of nobles. From 1910 is classified as a national monument. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 12.30 and from 13.30 to 17.30. Entrance 3 euros.

  • Beautiful view from the top. Peaceful and cool inside. Great view of the aqueduct from the inside. The map of the entire early system helps one to understand how water moves through Lisbon.  more »

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
