Rossio Square, Lisbon

4.0
#5 of 63 in Shopping in Lisbon
At Rossio Square, one of the main squares in Portugal since the Middle Ages, see Baroque ornamental fountains and monuments, have a coffee, and browse through a variety of colorful flowers for sale. Visit cafes that date back to the 18th century and check out the shops selling traditional pastries and spirits. See a 27 m (89 ft) column of King Pedro IV, who was also the first Emperor of Brazil. Snap photos of the 1840 neoclassical national theater, take a look around the 1887 Neo-Manueline train station, or walk along the cobblestone paths of this popular square. • The Rossio Square is the heart of Lisbon. Connected to the Terreiro do Paço on Rua Augusta. Here are the National Theatre d. Maria I, the Hard Rock Café, Rossio train station, many bars, restaurants and coffee shops, among them the Café Nicola, in Art Deco style, where the poet Bocage was courtside. From the Rossio Square reach any corner of the city: Chiado, Bairro Alto, Alfama, etc. Here's a great monument with a statue of King Pedro IV of Portugal, the same Pedro I of Brazil.

  • It is a great square from the wavy pavement to the National Theater. I love that there's trees to provide a little shade.  more »
  • Nerve center to start any tour of the area and its surroundings, a square with two sources, central statue, bars, restaurants, shops, hustling and theatre, we came here almost every day and we did route route San Jorge Castle Plaza trade center and Cathedral, two streets Martin Moniz to catch the tram 28, from this square you can walk to any of these places in a lovely place... nice walk... Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
