  • If you are in the area with kids, or even without, this would make for a pleasant, stimulating interlude. It is a small museum laid out on a single trail, so you have to backtrack to exit, but this on...  more »
  • Worth a visit, museum dedicated to interpreting and disseminating the history of puppet and the puppet theatre, covering the history of this fascinating art form across the world, showing the different types of puppets ... a lovely visit.

  • The Lisbon Marionette Museum is one of those great little European delights. It's not famous, and it's a tad off the beaten path. But it's an excellently curated museum of world puppets and the lighti...  more »

  • There are marionettes here from all across the world, and they do a really great job of including a number of cultural perspectives in exploring the art of marionettes. The downside is that they don't really have much of a partnership with any marionette theatres, where they could leverage that relationship in recounting specific stories about the usage of certain marionettes in a specific show. They do have an interactive stop-motion center, where you're able to move the marionettes and take photos and everything, to see your small cinematic creation! It was a really effective way to finish the tour, by opening up the relationship between puppetry, theatre, and contemporary cinema.
  • A nice trip around the world of puppetry, and "memory lane", of course. Also very educational in terms of understanding how it used to entertain children and grownups alike, in a time way before the internet, all the way to the modern puppet animation techniques with stop motion. The old convent where it is located has a huge stairway as the only way in. If you have trouble going up stairs, be prepared.
  • It has a cute and charming exhibition. I loved the display, the items and stories. I just wish it was a bit bigger and had a less generic gift shop, but anyway is really worth the visit if you like geeking out a bit about these things.
  • A very nice museum! The collection is rather small, but if you're interested in puppets, definitely worth a visit. It would take you between 30 min and 1 hour to see the permanent collection.
  • Small but excellent selection of all sorts of puppets, masks and so on. Also features a stop motion DIY corner, which is also showing original puppet designs and props of Portuguese animation filmmakers. And as a bonus a lovely, quiet, sunny and big patio.
