#95 of 604 in Things to do in Lisbon
If you travel around Lisbon, you will probably end up at Praca Marques do Pombal, an important roundabout in the city center. Several major bus lines run through this point, which features a large column in the center. The column commemorates Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, First Marquis of Pombal, the renowned prime minister who ruled Portugal from 1750 to 1777 and rebuilt the city after a terrible earthquake. If you plan on driving here, be prepared for the challenge of heavy, hectic traffic. • The Marquis of Pombal Square is one of the postcards of Lisbon. The square is in a roundabout, with a huge monument erected in honor of the Marquis of Pombal, controversial personality, which expelled the Jesuits from Brazil and Portuguese colonies, but tb was responsible for the urbanization of Lisbon after the terrible earthquake of 1755 which destroyed much of the city. I stayed at the Flamingo Hotel, right next to this square, which is served by the metro station "Marquis of Pombal. I rarely used the subway to get to the center of the city, because the walk to Rossio Square I spent 30 minutes in a delightful walk by AV. da Liberdade.

  • The large roundabout in the Centre of Lisbon, with in the Center the statue of the Marquis who rebuilt the city. From here you can take the tourist bus red 3.

  • Paying small amounts with a big bill does not work. The machine simply refuses.
  • This whole area is lovely to walk around. Extensive grassy areas and nearby there are many restaurants. A great place to visit as long as its a warm and sunny day. Not sure its the place to be on a cold and wet day though!
  • Very nice place to park your car in the middle of Lisbon.
  • Interesting monumental park above the city centre, surrounded by hotels. Nice to see.
  • At lisbon's heart, this big car Park has always available places to park the vehicle.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
