Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Lisbon

4.5
Inspired by Vasco da Gama, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos serves as a great example of Late Gothic Manueline architecture. You can tour the church, where several important events have occurred since the Middle Ages. Limestone sculptures inside the church pay homage to historical naval expeditions. Its impressive, ornate architectural style is partly why this World Heritage Site has become famous. The monastery was founded in 1495, though its structure was not completed for more than a century, in 1601. Vasco da Gama is buried here, along with other notable explorers. You can also visit the site's Maritime Museum and National Archeology Museum, as well as the nearby Tower of Belém. • beautiful, to visit absolutely. Many people and you have to queue several hours to buy tickets

  • A must see. It's grandiose and beautiful. Nice tribute to the Portuguese navigators who made us discover the world. To do

  • A must when you go to Lisbon for the first time. Easily reachable by means. Unfortunately it is always very busy and this makes the visit much less charming. Try to arrive early in the morning or late in the evening helps, maybe it is no longer open for the internal visit but you can still enjoy its exterior beauty

  • Incredible art and architecture. Word to the wise, do not queue immediately. There are two queues (lines). If facing the building, the queue on the left is the museum where you can buy tickets to the monastery. After you buy tickets at the digital kiosk, then head to the other queue but walk past it, to the main church doors on the outside. Here you will find massive doors adorned with incredibly detailed sculptures, great photo op! Then make your way into the church (not the monastery) because this part is a free, self-guided tour through the church where services are still held. More great photo ops from the main chamber of the church up to the sacristy. Then, queue for the monastery and be prepared to be blown away by the views, the history, the culture, the art and architecture. This place is simply incredible and pictures don't do it justice.
  • There's better cathedrals in Europe but the chapel here is Worthy of a once around. The 15 e trolley ( skip much ballyhooed 28 trolley if crowded... always) is your best access from Central Lisbon. If heading back to your cruise ship try the bus 728 transfer to 731.
  • Only went into the church (it was free!!) Spectacular as far a Lisbon churches go, even though most of it is less than 400 years old. A product of the wealth accrued from Portugal's multicultural explorations when it borrowed a few countries for a while. 😐
  • We arrived around 10:30 AM to find lines of people everywhere. It takes a lot of searching to figure out what line you might really want to be in! We did end up buying tickets for the monastery which was interesting and probably worth the tour. However, they have only 3 ticket machines for all of the people waiting in line. The machines take a bit of technology skill so that slows the process down even more. They do have lots of helpers there but perhaps they should go back to using those folks to sell the tickets and speed up the process. Of course very crowded in the monastery too. When leaving the monastery, you must then get in the long line again to see the cathedral.....it is free. The cathedral is beautiful but I was shocked at the total disrespect for the silence request! There were clear signs stating silence and several requests over the loud speaker. So, depending on what you want to see, so a careful study of the lines.
  • This is amazing architectural landmark, with incredibly details all over the immense building. It's an absolutely must go in every season of the year but go early in the morning because the lines are usually huge. Very very long. And bring your sunscreen. You won't regret.
