Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, Lisbon

Inspired by Vasco da Gama, Mosteiro dos Jeronimos serves as a great example of Late Gothic Manueline architecture. You can tour the church, where several important events have occurred since the Middle Ages. Limestone sculptures inside the church pay homage to historical naval expeditions. Its impressive, ornate architectural style is partly why this World Heritage Site has become famous. The monastery was founded in 1495, though its structure was not completed for more than a century, in 1601. Vasco da Gama is buried here, along with other notable explorers. You can also visit the site's Maritime Museum and National Archeology Museum, as well as the nearby Tower of Belém. • Very very beautiful. Very well preserved. the Cloister is simply superb! Unmissable visit for those who like these chunks of history. It is a pity to be able to visit a very small part of the...  more »
  • Lovely site to see. With a history going back centuries, it is one of the oldest extant sites in Lisbon. The facilities consist of lovely architecture and beautiful artwork. The only surprising thing was that the site itself is rather small. From the outside it looks large, but most of the building is taken up by the museum next door. Still, worth the price of admission!
  • Beautiful! This was such a quiet tranquil place, when you enter the cloister it is as if you have left the city it's so tranquil and the carvings leave you in awe they are so magnificent. Then you enter the actual church and its breathtaking a real wow moment. I would highly recommend a visit to see the sheer beauty of this place
  • Amazing place to visit. Long queues but worth it. The architecture is really amazing. Have sometime planned to visit is comfortably its pretty huge. Nice park with fountains in front and close to other sites in Belem district.
  • My first monastery and this place did not disappoint! It is absolutely beautiful! Buy your ticket in advance as the lines are very long! If you’re into taking pictures like I am, it’s best to go either early morning or 1-2 hours before close. Otherwise there will be lots of people. But also reminder to put down the camera and appreciate the beautiful gothic architecture!
  • This is quite the building, I wish we had been able to see the library during our visit. The monastery is beautiful, if a little empty, with only a few main areas to visit. It's nice to see the cathedral from both above and from the ground floor. It's included as part of the Lisboa card, so if you pick one up don't miss this.
