Igreja do Carmo, Lisbon

Categories: Sacred & Religious Sites, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.3/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web
See ruins of Igreja do Carmo, Lisbon's only church built almost entirely in Gothic style, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Today the site serves as an archaeological museum. Completed in 1423, the church was said to be the most lavish and imposing in the city at the time. Today you can tour the interior to see its remains and visit exhibits of various artifacts, architectural adornments, and noteworthy excavated items. View tombs of notable persons, such as King Ferdinand I, and see statues, Spanish-Moorish tiles, findings from the Roman and Visigoth periods, and relics dating back to 3500 BCE. • This convent built in the 11th century lies in ruins, but it is possible to have an idea of its grandeur and beauty.

  • The Church was restored to remember the earthquake in 1755 and impresses with its architecture and artwork. Look at the end a small museum where you will see the tomb of Kings.

  • A sunny day is good to enjoy the ruins. It's a quiet place, near the Elevator of the fair. Has a museum there with several pieces intact.

  • Beautiful little square. One of my favourite places to grab a beer in the city. There are often buskers making music, which adds on to the nice environment.
  • Free drinking water. Fill up your bottle here.
