Igreja do Carmo, Lisbon
(4.3/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
See ruins of Igreja do Carmo, Lisbon's only church built almost entirely in Gothic style, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. Today the site serves as an archaeological museum. Completed in 1423, the church was said to be the most lavish and imposing in the city at the time. Today you can tour the interior to see its remains and visit exhibits of various artifacts, architectural adornments, and noteworthy excavated items. View tombs of notable persons, such as King Ferdinand I, and see statues, Spanish-Moorish tiles, findings from the Roman and Visigoth periods, and relics dating back to 3500 BCE. • This church or pair of churches are covered with a beautiful tile wall. Not to be missed and very near the pedestrian shopping street in Victoria neighborhood.
  • A new attraction behind the Carmo Church that, as part of the complex, you will find here, is called the space Terrace do Carmo. Recently, was designed by the world famous Portuguese architect, Siza Vieira. This is an excellent example of revitalization in an opportunity of connection between the lower and the upper cities Lisbon. The DDD Terrace adds a bigger value to the complex of the Carmo Church, space that resisted (mysteriously) earthquakes, fires and other disasters throughout history. Is one of the main points of interest of the Portuguese capital.

  • Although almost destroyed by the earthquake, the Gothic architecture of the Church still impresses, worth checking out this tourist spot in Lisbon.

  • Beautiful little square. One of my favourite places to grab a beer in the city. There are often buskers making music, which adds on to the nice environment.
  • Great place to sit back and unwind.
  • Free drinking water. Fill up your bottle here.
  • Lugar histórico muito agradável, lugar onde foi a revolução dos cravos. Com óptimas esplanadas. O largo da acesso a dois museus.
  • Praça e ponto turístico no Largo do Carmo. De dia um ambiente e a noite outro. Recomendo a visita em ambos. Muito aconchegante!
