Central Mosque of Lisbon, Lisbon

3.8
#31 of 34 in Historic Sites in Lisbon
The Central Mosque of Lisbon is the main mosque of Lisbon, Portugal, serving the capital city's Islamic community. The building was designed by architects António Maria Braga and João Paulo Conceição; its external features include a minaret and a dome. The mosque contains reception halls, a prayer hall and an auditorium. The Central Mosque has formed a council to provide financial and others services to needy members of the local Muslim community. Although permission to build the center was requested in 1966, it was not granted until 1978 after the 1973 oil crisis and the Arab oil-producing nations gained increasing economic and political status. The structure was finally inaugurated in 1985.

We were walking from Parque Eduardo to the Calouste Gulbekian and en route we crossed in front of the Central mosque of Lisbon. We did not visit, just enjoy the beautiful and characteristic architecture

An opportunity to see in Portugal a mosque. Well-organized visit, in particular as regards the socio-cultural environment of the community. Excellent restaurant vegetarian dinner that has a door to the outside.

For those who never visited large mosques, such as the Imperial mosques in Istanbul, can be very interesting for those who already had that opportunity the interest will be lower, but nevertheless is an interesting experience, as the visit enables to meet virtually all of the mosque and even attend a prayer (I don't know if there is always this possibility). My visit also included dinner and this was the weakest point of the program and so my average rating. The food in addition to be nothing special, was cold, the dish can be said that it was rather poor, bread (nan) was too cold and the space of the restaurant (cantina) and not be comfortable, the room temperature was always very cold, so that most people have to eat of jacket on. Leave a positive note for the hospitality and to Provide that in a totally informal way received, talking about religious affairs in relaxed tone and with a good disposition.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
