Castelo de Sao Jorge, Lisbon
(4.3/5 based on 14,000+ reviews on the web)
Castelo de Sao Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. Explore one of the city's most popular tourist sites by foot, take in views from its high vantage point, and discover the castle's archeological and historic relevance. • This attraction is quite hard to get to and requires a significant uphill walk. There are much better castles in Portugal, but if you are only visiting Lisbon it is interesting. However there are bett...  more »

  • Not advisable for anyone who would struggle with a lot of uneven surfaces and steps. Suitable footwear is a must! I slipped over a lot as I wore sandals. Really great views across Lisbon. 8.50 for an adult ticket. Queues for the camera obscura.
  • A good opportunity to see the castle walls from the attacker's point of view. Shaded by olive trees and hosting a number of peacocks, well worth a stroll after you've made the climb.
  • A beautiful garden of the castelo de Sao Jorge, where you can see a good part of Portugal history, and have the best view to see the whole city of Lisbon. Don't forget to take a photo with the peacocks there.
  • Amazing view up here
  • Garden with some archaeological remains to see quickly. The best enjoy the views of the of the Baixa and Chiado neighbourhoods
