Basilica da Estrela, Lisbon

4.2
Admire the fusion of Neoclassical and Baroque styles at Basilica da Estrela, one of the capital city's most recognizable churches and symbols. Finished in 1790 on the orders of Queen Maria, the church features an intricate facade with statues, carvings, and two tall bell towers. Explore the richly decorated interior, noting the different colors of marble used in the architecture. You'll find the tomb of Queen Maria laid out in the right-hand hallway. Be sure to continue past the tomb to get a glimpse of the extensive nativity scene, consisting of more than 500 individual terra cotta pieces. Make your way to the top of the basilica dome for a view over the capital. Gothic lines on classical basis. One body. The cost of the visit the terrazzo is 4 euro per person, maybe a little extreme to see a panorama that Lisbon is full for free.

This temple impresses with its ease and the East. The white piece of late Baroque. The current church, here lies Queen Maria i. opposite the Basilica, across a small square, a romantic park where you can relax in the shade on a hot day.

The church itself was closed when we visited but we were offered access to a spiral staircase up to the roof and terrace around the dome. We were the only people up there and the views of Lisbon were great. The door into the dome reveals a narrow walkway around the inside of the dome. Oh my God was it high!! Don't go if you suffer from vertigo!! Not bad for €4

You have to take a street cart or a Tuk Tuk to arrive to this church. If you decided to visit the statue of Jesus which is on the other side of town crossing the bridge, it is worth it to come to this church. There is a park across the street where you can hang for a bit before you start heading down. From here to the statue of Jesus the Google map says it is only a 30 minutes walk. Guess what, I'm doing it. I will post more about this area once I get there.

The typical european church with a little additional touch: a sclupture of the nativity scene (2€ to see the sclupture).

Fantastic understated Church one of my favourites in Lisbon. Worth paying to go onto the roof terrace. Park opposite is also very pleasant

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
