Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon

4.1
#3 of 85 in Shopping in Lisbon
Modeled after the Champs-Elysees in Paris, Avenida da Liberdade serves as the main boulevard and walkway in Lisbon. Flanked on either end by Restauradores Square and Marquis of Pombal Square, this 90 m (295 ft) wide avenue was built in 1879. Spend your day visiting the designer shops that line this street, such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Tods, and relax at charming cafes along the way. Stroll down the beautiful mosaic path under the shade of tall trees, take a seat by elegant fountains and lush gardens, or view historical mansions and exhibitions on the famous avenue. The area is also home to the Monument to the Heroes of the Great War, which honors the 40,000 Portuguese soldiers who fought in World War I. Planning Lisbon trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • Nice and wide shaded, lined avenue of shops and luxury hotels and rising (rare in Lisbon where the slopes are generally rather raides☺!) gently sloping towards the marks of Pombal square and the beautiful park Eduarddo VII. A nice ride.

  • Av da Liberdade is the Fifth Avenue of Lisbon. Beautiful, tree-lined, full of designer shops, bars, restaurants and hotels. The AV. da Liberdade binds to the Marques de Pombal Square Praça dos Restauradores, Rossio, Rua Augusta to Commerce Square (Terreiro do Paço). This route takes 20 minutes to walk. Is a super wide Avenue with a beautiful central garden, statues, benches and lots of trees.

  • I love walking across this avenue extension, which is one of the major of the city of Lisbon, which binds Praça dos Restauradores to Praça do Marquês de Pombal. Has become a ritual for me, as it is a wooded area with sidewalks filled by beautiful mosaics, shops and luxury hotels. My biggest attraction is sitting on some of the existing kiosks across the Avenue in environment, open and with tables on the sidewalk. More than recommend.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
