Arco da Rua Augusta, Lisbon
(4.6/5 based on 3,600+ reviews on the web)
A commemorative arch dedicated to recovery from the 1775 earthquake, Arco da Rua Augusta boasts 7 m (23 ft) statues at its top, representing glory, valor, and ingenuity. Originally a bell tower, this neoclassical structure took over a century to become what it is today. Standing over 30 m (100 ft), it welcomes you to the historical area of Lisbon. Look for statues of Vasco da Gama, Nuno Alvares Pereira, Viriato, and Marquis of Pombal at its lower level. Climb the arch's gazebo to get panoramic views of Rua Augusta. • Its construction was decided in 1759, shortly after the earthquake of 1755 and only completed in 1873. At the top of the arch, you can see sculptures of Célestin Anatole Calmels, while a lower plan are sculptures by Victor Bastos. Calmels sculptures represent glory crowning the Genius and the value. The sculptures by Victor Bastos represent Nuno Álvares Pereira, Vasco da Gama and viriathus, the Marquis of Pombal. At left, the Tagus River, and on the right the river Duero, by also by the sculptor Victor Bastos

  • Gray afternoon, low light but still is to visit. I can't imagine what it will be like a "blue day", as only exists in Lisbon. Congratulations to those who made possible this project.

  • Nice views of Lisbon with an affordable price. No long queues
  • Marvel at the workings of the old clock on your way to the viewing platform on the roof. Spectacular views across Lisbon in all directions so don't forget your camera!
  • The historical value is unbelievable. The mirror image of the buildings across the massive court yard is remarkable. A.must see.
  • Gorgeous Arch with really cool sculptures on top. I took a lift up to the very top (only €2.50) and I was to say the view was incredible. You can see different parts of the city from the top: over looking the beach, Alfama, etc. The lift takes you quite high up and then you have to walk up a few steps no big deal ... But it is definitely worth it and I highly recommend it. Under the arch there is beautiful walkways where people sell all kinds of ornate products on stalls.
  • Landmark in Lisbon. The busy street that ends in the fantastic arch. Great views from the top.
