Arco da Rua Augusta, Lisbon

4.6
#16 of 980 in Things to do in Lisbon
A commemorative arch dedicated to recovery from the 1775 earthquake, Arco da Rua Augusta boasts 7 m (23 ft) statues at its top, representing glory, valor, and ingenuity. Originally a bell tower, this neoclassical structure took over a century to become what it is today. Standing over 30 m (100 ft), it welcomes you to the historical area of Lisbon. Look for statues of Vasco da Gama, Nuno Alvares Pereira, Viriato, and Marquis of Pombal at its lower level. Climb the arch's gazebo to get panoramic views of Rua Augusta. • 7/19 (Wednesday) visiting. Comércio square, going from the Augusta Street, go through the gate. Go through the gate from the narrow street and square of the Tagus River, liberating. It is the sky grew because the weather was good.

  • As its name says, is a Monumental Arch. Leaving the Rossio Square, walk down the street Augusta, which is only for pedestrians and arrive at Praça do Comércio or Terreiro do Paço, passing by the imposing Arco da Rua Augusta. Here is full of shops to suit all budgets, bars, restaurants, pastry shop where they sell the famous custard tarts and the famous cod dumplings stuffed with cheese from Serra da Estrela. The ride here is unhurried.

  • Best possible view of the square and the river. The entrance can be easily missed, look for it on the left side of the Avenue leading to the arch. Get your camera ready and indulge yourself.
  • Beautiful landmark of Lisbon. It is nice to admire it from the floor and observing its uncountable details. Also, it is possible to pay an amount of Euros and go up to this place and observe Lisbon’s surroundings from the top.
  • Incredible view from the top! Going inside the clock and rising above to view the square below! Absolutely amazing!!
  • An elevator takes you to the clock level then very narrow steep stairs get you to the outside observation level. The view of Lisbon and the river is spectacular. The cost was €2.50 per adult, children under 5 free.
  • A must see! Beautiful at night and less people in your pictures...

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
