#11 of 93 in Sightseeing in Lisbon
Monument Tourist Spot
A commemorative arch dedicated to recovery from the 1775 earthquake, Arco da Rua Augusta boasts 7 m (23 ft) statues at its top, representing glory, valor, and ingenuity. Originally a bell tower, this neoclassical structure took over a century to become what it is today. Standing over 30 m (100 ft), it welcomes you to the historical area of Lisbon. Look for statues of Vasco da Gama, Nuno Alvares Pereira, Viriato, and Marquis of Pombal at its lower level. Climb the arch's gazebo to get panoramic views of Rua Augusta. Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.

  • The Arch is the landmark that identifies the grand Praca do Comercio and serves really as the gate into the City of Lisbon. Not far from the arch heading into town with your back to the Praca is a fan...  more »
  • This gateway monument is a beautiful icon for Lisbon. The high and depth of the arch are quite impressive along with it's many very detailed architectural elements.  more »
  • Magnificent gateway from the square in to the bottom of Rua Augusta. It's impressive in bright sunlight, and I guess even more so when floodlit after dusk  more »

  • We didn't know you could climb the arc! I'd bet the view of the square and the ocean is great. Nevertheless the view from below was also magnificent!
  • Great spot. Day and Night you need to be at this place. Historical, picturesque.
  • Impressive architecture, great views of the square below and the sea beyond. Historically important. Good experience. Entry fee applicable.
  • It's cheap to visit and there's always almost no line. The view is great. The architecture is amazing. Recommend it
  • Nice view of the Plaça, old town and the river. You go up by elevator but need to climb to the top via narrow staircase
