Alfama, Lisbon

4.6
#2 of 18 in Neighborhoods in Portugal
Wander through the oldest district in town, Alfama, known for its high concentration of Fado bars and restaurants. Set between Sao Jorge Castle and Tejo river, it's a good choice of walking areas for tourists. During Moorish rule, this was the entire city. The picturesque side streets and squares survived the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and today are beautiful tourist attractions. Stroll down Rua do Barao, stop into quaint shops, and listen to Fado--a musical style native to the region--at a local bar. As you explore, you'll notice historic sites and several churches along the way, until you reach the walls of the 12th century Lisbon Cathedral. Typical area of Lisbon. Provide good shoes because of the numerous uphill and downhill in this neighborhood. It is nice to stroll, however a little disappointed by the large number of homes tagged, abandoned and waste on the ground that spoils the visit.

Alfama, one of the old and very picturesque neighbourhoods of Lisbon where dinner of tapas and wine served in small bistros that swarm and where artists will sing from terrace to terrace and keep alive the tradition of this popular art, typically from home.

A particular neighborhood, to see. Not very clean, not luxurious. But curious. You can find street performers, but also rather bizarre characters. Small local, cute. A good way to get around is definitely the trolley, cheap (just 6.15 euros a day pass, which includes the use of the Metro) and typical of the area.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Check into one of Lisbon's grand city center hotels to position yourself well to explore the central historical districts on foot. To avoid the potentially high prices of some of the Old Town's central upscale hotels, try staying in a hostel instead. While some hostels have an upper age limit for their guests, they're affordable and oftentimes offer access to attractions on par with or better than bigger hotels. In the upper town, opt for one of the family-run bed and breakfasts, which provide affordable rooms and, as the name would suggest, include a meal as well.
